RE: algae issues - UPDATE  Aves, Dan : BPC IT
 Jan 23, 2004 02:29 PST

Anybody have any idea what the extent of these
built in "reserves" could be?

Well, when I started to add calc to my RO topup, I must have had a real
deficit of calcium. Within three or four days I noticed a big green hair
algae die off. It all went thin, grey & brittle. I presumed this was a
result of phosphate binding to calcium & coming out of solution so there
wasnt enough for algae to live off.

Up until then, I wasnt very good with calcium additions so it probably had a
big effect due to the bigger than average difficiency... ???

I'd say you should start seeing improvement in hair algae within a week or
two. Also, if my tank is anyting to go by, I'd say that hair algae is really
linked to phosphate, whereas the slime stuff &/or cyno bacteria is less so
IMO. Only increased water changes helped with this with me (I might be
wrong).
