Marlo,
If you remove the canisters then as long as you replace them with equivalent internal pumps I can see no problems, assuming that they are only for circulation.
I have always worked on the fact that you can never have too much flow, 16x for soft and 20x for hard corals water turnover per hour are the figures I have read, although people go a lot higher that this. Remember that as the corals grow and the pumps age your actual flow will decrease. I have read about people having problems with hard corals growing too much, restricting the actual flow in the tank and subsequently suffering from tissue loss due to the lowered flow around their base.
Rich.

Subject: [IMA] Filtration Question
I have two Magnum <http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/prcansiterfilters/fr/fprmagnum350.htm> 350 Canister filters on the tank which are primarily used for circulation however yesterday I had an accident. One of the hoses came loose and started pumping water into the stand and on the floor. I have wood floor so this is a very costly proposition should it have happened while I was not available to fix it right away.
Can I take them off with no ill effects?
If I switch out my 3 small powerheads for 2Rio 2500s (692 gph) will that overpower my 75 US gal tank (283 liters)?
That will leave me with the 2 skimmers and 2 powerheads only (along with rock and sand).
Regards,
