Gaza Militants Resume Fire

Thu Feb 10, 2005

GAZA (Reuters) - Palestinian militants have fired a series of mortar bombs
and rockets into Jewish settlements in Gaza, two days after Palestinian and
Israeli leaders declared a halt to violence at a summit meeting.

The Islamist faction Hamas said the barrage, which caused no casualties,
were a reprisal for the killing of a Palestinian man by Israeli army
gunfire from a settlement on Wednesday. Soldiers reacted to a suspected
infiltration attempt, army sources said.

Hamas said it launched 46 mortars and rockets over a two-hour period at day
break on Thursday and threatened more of the same. The Israeli military
reported 17 mortar impacts in settlements and army posts and areas just
over the border in Israel.

It was the first sustained outbreak of shooting since Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas proclaimed a ceasefire at a summit in Egypt with Israeli
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who reciprocated by declaring a halt to all
military action against militants.

Militant groups had been observing an informal truce at the moderate
Abbas's behest since soon after he won election on January 9 on a platform
of non-violent struggle for statehood, but said they would not be bound by
his summit ceasefire declaration.

Hamas, sworn to Israel's destruction, said in a statement after Thursday's
mortar salvoes that it would continue such attacks "until the Zionist enemy
is removed humiliated from our blessed land".

It was not clear whether Hamas meant it would no longer exercise restraint
as promised to Abbas or was effectively reiterating that any Israeli army
killing of Palestinians would be met with a fierce response.
