INTRODUCTION
This "KIDMM News" email newsletter has been created primarily
for people interested in being kept informed about what's going
on in the KIDMM community, but who don't want the hassle of
reading the participatory BCS-KIDMM email discussion list on
JISCmail or repeatedly checking on the Web! As a KIDMM News
subscriber you'll be able to follow the links to things that
appear interesting to you.
I shall be producing KIDMM News at approximately fortnightly
intervals.
At the time of writing, 57 people have subscribed to this
e-newsletter.

AFTER THE MASH-UP
93 people attended the MetaKnowledge Mash-up day event in London
on 17 September 2007. A couple of audio recordings of talks (by
Leonard Will and Ian Herbert) have been posted to the KIDMM Web
site, and five of the slidesets.

Pete Murray was doing some live blogging at the Mash-up:
http://www.bcs.org/server.php?show=ConBlog.6
For the last couple of weeks I have been transcribing the audio
record of the day and writing up a comprehensive account. This
is being "forked" -- a short version is being produced for release
by UKOLN within their onlime magazine "Ariadne". I shall also be
preparing a longer, illustrated version. These will also be posted
to the "Outputs" page listed above, when ready. I tell you, it is
a very painful process...
After the Mash-up, we had a little rash of people joining the
JISCmail discussion list, membership of which now stands at 65.
You can see who is there:

KIDMM COMMUNITY SITE IN PREPARATION
There still isn't anything that one could accurately describe as
a "KIDMM membership", though membership of the JISCmail e-list
comes pretty close...
Inspired by what Richard Millwood told us about the Communities
of Practice facilities provided for local government by the
I&DeA Knowledge project of the Improvement and Development
Agency, I have been investigating what it would take to make
a Web 2.0 style community site with open discussion forums,
the ability to host blogs, share documents and links, and
build collaborative-authored resources including link-lists,
glossaries, bibliographies etc.
On my own initiative I have registered "www.kidmm.org" and have
paid for a year's hosting. After some consultation, I have
installed the Drupal CMS on this site on which to build a
"KIDMM Community" Web service.
This isn't going to be a quick build as I don't have any
programming skills: all my Web-building skills are just
in static HTML and CSS. But I'm happy to say that help is
forthcoming, both in planning what facilities to offer and
in actual implementation.
I'm happy to acknowledge offers of support from Cher Devey,
Sabine McNeill, Andrew Larcombe and Paul Adams.
So no, there's no point yet in visiting kidmm.org as all
you'll see is a holding page and you can't even log on
and join, contrary to appearances! But I'm very happy
to engage in correspondence with people about what kind
of facilities we could set up and share at kidmm.org.

KIDMM on Facebook
John Lindsay (University of Kingston) has started a KIDMM group
on Facebook (just yesterday in fact). There are four members
in the group so far. Participating in Facebook groups is an
interesting thought-experiment in what kind of facilities we
might build into kidmm.org. And John's ideas are always quite
thought-provoking.

KIDMM exhibition panels
One KIDMM project that is on hold at the moment is the creation of
a portable set of exhibition panels about "Issues in Informatics"
(a survey of KIDMM issues and their relevance in society).
Two panels were produced and on display at the Mash-up event.
Further development has had to take a back seat while the event
write-up is the most urgent work focus.
The idea is that eventually we'll have a set of about eight to
ten of these, which can be put up at events or at venues such
as universities, to raise consciousness and stimulate debate.
I've written a page about this project, which includes evaluation
of the production and display methodologies. It's not "exposed"
on the KIDMM Web site, but you can find it here:

KIDMM at BCS Specialist Groups Assembly
During 2007, KIDMM received financial and organisational support
from the British Computer Society, largely as part of a drive by
the BCS to bring "knowledge communities" into being within the
Society by linking together its Specialist Groups and Forums.
KIDMM is seen in some quarters as being a possible prototypical
model of what "knowledge communities" might be, and I have been
asked to speak for 15 minutes at the end of the SG Assembly on
1 November about lessons that might be learned from the KIDMM
experiment. I also hope to display our first two exhibition
panels and conduct some "requirements elicitation" exercises
at lunchtime to gain input into deciding topics for the rest
of the exhibition, and also what features would be desirable
on kidmm.org.

Keith Gordon, secretary of the BCS Data Management Specialist Group,
gave a talk on 12th September 2007 to mark the launch of his book
"Principles of Data Management: Facilitating Information Sharing",
published by the British Computer Society. That talk is available
as an MP3 audio file from the "Radio KIDMM" page:

Ann Apps (MIMAS, University of Manchester) attended the
Dublin Core Metadata Initiative's 2007 conference in
Singapore, and has posted her report:

The sixth Networked Knowledge Information Systems workshop
was held on 21st September, at the 11th European Conference
on Digital Libraries in Budapest. Presentations from this
are now posted online.

Our "fraternal organisation" ISKO-UK (the UK chapter of the
International Society for Knowledge Organisation) is holding
a free, open event at University College London on 5 November
which looks well worth attending if you're into classification
issues. It's dubbed "Ranganathan revisited: facets for the future"
and represents the next chance we have for a get-together. Look
forward to seeing your facet there?

More KIDMM News in two weeks' time! In fact I'll aim in our next issue
to report back on the SG Assembly outing, and the ISKO % November event.

KIDMM stands for Knowledge, Information, Data and Metadata Management.
KIDMM is an informal knowledge community which started as a
collaboration
between Specialist Groups of the British Computer Society.
The main KIDMM Web site is hosted by the BCS Electronic Publishing
