What People Can Do To Help/Krug Lockout  Lauren Coodley
 Oct 27, 2001 13:02 PDT

Dear friends:

Here's a quick update on what those of you who care about these
workers (and who would not, after meeting them?) can do and ask your
organizations to do:

l. We have T-shirts that say "Crush Grapes not Workers" on one side
and "Boycott CK Mondavi/Krug Wines" on the other.

To order, contact either me (lcoo-@hotmail.com) or Jerry Davis
(jl-@napanet.net). We will charge you enough to cover costs and make a
small donation to help the lockout checks be larger.

2. Write letters to the Peter Mondavi Family, at POB 191, 2800 Main
St, St. Helena 94574. See Steve Freedkin's great website for
automatic faxing of your letter:
http://www.progressiveportal.org/letters/labor

Copy your letter to the local papers: edi-@napanews.com, or
edi-@sthelenastar.com, and to Napa Valley Conference and Vistors
Bureau at 13l0 Napa Town Center, Napa 94559. Please stress the
inhumanity of a lockout of live human beings who want to work and
can't live on a forced wage reduction. Please stress the shocking
contrast between the affluence of the Mondavi family and the humble
workers locked out of a workplace where they've spent the majority of
their lives. Ask the family to bring them back with dignity to their
jobs. Mention the bad reputation to the tourist industry which this
lockout has brought to the valley.

3. Donate to the worker fund: UFCW 186d, Westamerica Bank, 1
Financial Plaza, Napa 94558, and ask others to do so.

4. Encourage people to drop by the picket line, any day, at 11600
Main St, just north of St Helena, but especially on Sundays from 11am
to 3pm when we invite the community to join the picket line. It's
fun!

5. Help me continue to pester elected officials to get involved.
The local ones are not helping, so let's push on State Senator John
Burton, Congressional Reps. Dick Gerhardt and Nancy Pelosi, all of
whom have allies in the labor movement. Help me push the California
Labor Federation to publicize this lockout, to send people to picket,
and to donate.

6. Please emphasize to your contacts that this is the last union
shop in the entire napa valley and that the leading union-busting
S.F. law firm of Mendelsohn, Little and Co are working for the
Mondavi family. These workers can only survive on the determination
of the entire labor movement, Bay Area, statewide and national.

Thank you all for your help.   Some examples of what people have done:

l. At UC Davis Law School, the students are holding a bake sale for
the workers and a teach-in on the issues, inviting the law school
faculty to participate.

2. At Napa Valley College, the teachers union (CTA) gave a $2000
donation to the lockout fund; at Los Rios, the teachers union wrote a
letter announcing its support of the boycott to the Mondavi family;
the Marin Association of Public Employees also wrote a wonderful
letter to its members, cc'ing the Mondavis.

3. SEIU Local 614 generously co-sponsored a fundraiser for WTC
victims and Krug workers, a great encouragement to the workers. Local
Ballet Folklorico children's dance troupe gave a wonderful
performance.

4. Writer Gray Brechin came up and gave a talk at St Helena's Lyman
Park which was translated into Spanish. We need other writers and
labor activists to come up and do something similar. Please notify
me when you can come up to spend an hour with us.

Thanks everyone!
