Dear Krug Supporters:
Tuesday night, 12/18/2001, the Berkeley City Council passed the Peace and
Justice Commission's resolution endorsing the boycott of Charles Krug
Winery and supporting the locked-out workers. The resolution had also
been endorsed by the Berkeley Labor Commission.
Now Supervisor Matt Gonzales is looking at proposing a similar resolution to
the S.F. Board of Supervisors. Could any of you who are interested contact
his aide to encourage this important step? She can be located at:
Kim Kochaver, kkoch-@yahoo.com or (4l5) 554-7630. Other progressive
communities such as Davis or Santa Cruz might be encouraged to pass similar
resolutions.
To see the text of the resolution or other archived materials on this
struggle, go to
<http://www.progressiveportal.org/discussion/labor>, or to
<http://www.napanews.com> and
search for "krug."
The lockout continues, with the company openly telling the workers that
their membership in the union is costing them their jobs.
Donations can be sent to Westamerica Bank, 1 Financial Plaza, Napa 94558.
A rally is planned for January 5 (Saturday) with a march through St Helena
and a speech by San Francisco Labor Council President Walter Johnson and
others. Please encourage labor activists and others to attend or to contact
me if they wish to speak.
Best wishes,
Lauren Coodley
P.S. what has astonished the workers is not only the viciousness of the
Mondavi/Krug attack, but the solidarity of strangers, which they had never
experienced. They are constantly expressing their amazement and gratitude
to you, the wider community, who have written or signed letters, sent
support and publicized their situation on KPFA. Your outreach to this group
of workers will never be forgotten by them.
