RALLY JAN. 5 FOR KRUG WINERY WORKERS

A coalition of student organizations, union members, religious groups,
and other concerned citizens will hold a rally on Saturday, January 5th,
2002 to mark the six-month anniversary of the lockout at Charles Krug
Winery. The 43 unionized production workers were locked out by the Peter
Mondavi family, owners of Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena, on July 3,
2001. This lockout is widely regarded as among the most important labor
conflicts in California today, since Charles Krug is the last unionized
winery in Napa Valley.

The event will begin at ll:00 a.m. and will last until 3:00 p.m. The
community is invited to gather at Lyman Park, at the corner of Main and
Pine Streets in St. Helena, for music and speeches.

Featured speakers will include Walter Johnson, Executive Secretary of
the San Francisco Labor Council (invited); Sasha Futran, former member
KQED Board Of Directors; Steve Zeltzer, Producer of the Labor Video
Project; Matt Gonzales, San Francisco Supervisor who is sponsoring a
resolution of support for the Krug workers (invited), similar to that
passed by the Berkeley City Council on December l8; and Rogelia Hurtado,
third-generation Krug employee who has worked for the winery for over
thirty years. Sacramento State University historian-labor archivist Al
Stein will discuss the controversial exhibit at the Napa Valley Museum
which omits the lockout and all mention of the production workers from
the history of the winery. Local political and religious leaders have
also been invited to speak and Bay Area musician Larry Shaw will provide
entertainment Following the program, supporters will march through
downtown St. Helena to remind the community that the lockout of
long-time employees continues and that families are suffering after six
months without income.

This rally is the latest in a number of community events to support the
locked-out workers. Other events have included a teach-in at UC Davis
Law School, a salsa dance at Napa Valley College, and a toy drive
spearheaded by the Marin County public employees' union.
