Local 186D in their campaign to preserve the last remaining wine
production union in Napa Valley.
WHEREAS, the Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena, California, owned by

remaining unionized wine-production workforce in Napa Valley, belonging
to Local 186D of the United Food and Commercial Workers; and,
WHEREAS, on July 3, 2001, in the middle of contract negotiations,
management at the Charles Krug Winery locked out 43 Local 186D members
in wine blending, bottling and other production tasks; and,
WHEREAS, management of the Charles Krug Winery has proposed a series of
cutbacks at a time when the winery is experiencing a period of

WHEREAS, these cutbacks include general pay reductions for many workers,
some of whom have worked at Charles Krug for decades, as well as benefit
reductions including cutbacks in medical benefits; and,
WHEREAS, the management at Charles Krug has been employing well-known
union-busting tactics such as replacing union foremen positions with
management staff and eliminating pay raises based on seniority; and,
WHEREAS, the leadership of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union
has called upon management at Charles Krug Winery to end the lock-out
and bargain in good faith; and,
WHEREAS, the management at Charles Krug Winery has refused this request,

WHEREAS, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union has asked for
public support in its ongoing negotiations with the Charles Krug Winery;
now, therefore, be it
