3. LPMC holds first poker fundraiser
Two weeks ago Sunday as Juan Pablo Montoya was speeding in the pits at
the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Libertarian Party of Marion County
was gambling. No, not on the Nascar race.
Instead, the party was holding its first "Texas Hold 'Em Poker"
fundraiser at Just Judy's restaurant on 54th Street. With the Nascar
race ignored on a television in the corner, eighteen poker players
competed, in a Las Vegas setting, for the event's three grand prizes.
The winner took home $690.
Dennis Wilson of Elite Casino Productions (and a former LP candidate for
Beech Grove City Council) provided the professional gambling tables,
cards and chips. http://www.elitecasinoproductions.com/ The dealers
were party volunteers.
Everyone had so much fun, the party's leadership vowed to hold another
event a.s.a.p. "This was an unqualified success," said chairman Tim
Maguire, "except I think all the winners were Democrats and
Republicans."

6. Take measure of bad government by Paul Wheeler
One of the proposals before the City Council on Monday evening is an
ordinance with amendments that would forbid anyone soliciting or holding
any sign within 50 feet of any intersection that has a stop light or
stop sign. I have to wonder if any of the members have measured 50'
from an intersection to find where it goes.
Taking a 50'-measuring tape, I quickly discovered it goes 32' from an
intersection to the front door of Jimmy Johns restaurant, and going
another 18' to the INSIDE of the restaurant; 35' to Dunkin Donuts front
door with 15' to the INSIDE; 26' from the corner intersection to the
front door of Stake N Shake, with 24' going into INSIDE; 34' from the
intersection near Acapulco Joes to the outdoor fenced in seating with
another 16' into the seating area, and this is already passed the front
door; 18' to Le Peeps front door with 32' going INSIDE their property.
One can only imagine the hundreds of affected businesses throughout
Marion County.
Many storefront properties will be in violation of the proposed
ordinance if their employees wear aprons or nametags advertising their
business. And what about protesters with signs? The government's
encroachment of property rights, freedom of speech and expression, and
targeting of a segment of our population for selective discrimination
will never survive a Constitutional challenge. The ACLU of Indiana must
be drooling at the prospect of Council members passing a misguided,
overly broad ordinance like this. It is a panhandler's dream come true.
He has nothing to lose, and the citizens will have to pay.

“I love these members. They get up and say, ‘Read the bill.’ What good
is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days
and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?” -
