If you weren't there you missed a good one:

Mother's Day Regatta 2009

By
Dave Abbott

Bob Pegel started this regatta many years ago and Wendell Sherry was kind
enough to donate the "Bob Pegel Perpetual trophy in his honor. This is the
longest running annual regatta in District 20 (Illinois and WI). Lake
Geneva YC opted out of hosting after many years so Pewaukee YC stepped up
big time and put on a top notch event in conjunction with their White Cap X
Boat regatta. I think we showed the Cub Boaters that there is a wonderful
life in Lasering when they graduate from Cubs (at 16). An inexpensive fun
boat that's also an Olympic class for both Full and Radial rigs - can't beat
the Laser!

It was a cold blustery day as we registered the intrepid sailors. There was
discussion of sending the Cub Boaters home due to inclement weather, but I
made sure that everyone understood that Laser folks go rain, sleet, or snow
which can always happen in early May in Wisconsin! Jeff and Megan Seeboth
were kind enough to bundle up and come out to be our awesome RC giving us 6
good races to allow us 1 throwout.

Kevin Jewett, an ace scow sailor at PYC, former college All American, coach
at Wisco, ect. was our "mystery guest" and won the 6 race event. He was
also the top master, being an apprentice. Carlos Abisanbra from Chicago via
Columbia gave him a run for the money in 2nd only 1 point behind. Dave
Poquette of South Shore YC, also an apprentice master was 3rd overall and
also the 3rd Master. Mark Kastel came out of hibernation in La Crosse to
get 4th overall but passed Dave with his masters handicap to be our 2nd
Master. Buck Mercer, a newcomer to District 20, showed excellent speed to
round out the top 5 and was also the 6th master being nosed out by yours
truly who put his old age to good use.

The Juniors showed up in force and all sailed radial rigs. Robbie Johnson
of PYC showed the full rigs his transom often and was 9th overall and the
1st junior. Robbie and the rest of the juniors elected to start with the
big rigs and it made the racing very fun and competitive with the larger
number of boats on the course. Robbie was followed by Spencer Jones of PYC
and Whitney Kent of SSYC.

A wonderful lunch was served by the great folks at PYC followed by trophies
and shopping for Mom.
