Commodity Purchasing  Tracy Pileski

We are changing the way we distribute our POs to our buyers so they can become "commodity experts". In the past they have been assigned to "requesting locations" (RQ01) which resulted in more than one buyer purchasing and negotiating pricing for the same product without the other knowing.

I have taken the big leap and assigned the buyers to items in IC12 instead. My guidelines have been our GL categories, specialty areas like OR and Surgery Centers, Cathlab and Radiology, Medical vs Non-Medical, etc.

We have 4 medical buyers, 2 non-medical buyers and 1 contract specialist in our Purchasing Department. We have other buyers in Pharmacy, Facilities and Nutritional and our in-house warehouse who don't report to Purchasing.

What I'm looking for is information on breaking the items down in commodities that could be distributed "evenly" to the buyers. Some have experienced tripled workload and others have minimal. I have attached a copy of our current groupings but we have a long ways to go tweaking this before we get it right.

How are your POs distributed and are you using commodities?

Thanks,
Tracy Pileski
