At my previous job (a college south of Boston) we regularly hired
evening/weekend librarians from the unsolicited resumes we received. In
fact, we never needed to advertise for these positions because we always
had a decent pool to draw from. You might not turn up a permanent
position immediately by sending unsolicited resumes, but it could help
get your foot in the door. One of these former evening/weekend
librarians now has my old job, full time and tenure track.

the Career Education
Center at my school (Simmons in Boston) told me to
send out letters of
inquiry to directors of libraries where I would like
to work that don't
have any openings listed. Does this have any merit?
