Guest Author, Michael Crichton
HAPPINESS IS...

What is happiness, and how do you go about raising your well-being
awareness? Author Michael Crichton shares thoughts on the factors that
translate into purposeful life:

"Losing your self-preoccupation is important. How do you do that?
Simple: focus on something else. People dedicated to something other
than themselves——helping family and friends, or a political cause, or
others less fortunate than they——are the happiest people in the world."

INDIVIDUAL TALENTS
Copyright (c) 2007 by Benjamin Devey

It’s been a while since the last time LL&L delivered, and I apologize
for the lapse. Life has been so hectic that the months pass by like
weeks filled with demands. Does it get that way for you too?

Last month I started an article for our newsletter, but the topic was
too ambitious, spilling out over 20 pages. I realized that even
serialized, the topic might not work for our newsletter format. And when
I didn’t have a backup idea in place, I let it go.

A young lady, who lives next-door, just returned from a mission in Costa
Rica. She spoke in the church meeting this week, sharing insights she
had learned while serving the people of the island province.

She shared an insight about uniqueness that I hadn’t considered quite
the same way. It’s the thought that God doesn’t expect us to lose our
individuality in His service.

Everyone has different strengths and gifts. Your talents are unique to
the entire universe. You present your distinctive personality to
everyone you meet. You influence others in ways only you can. God honors
individual agency. He doesn’t expect people to be alike.

A friend came over Saturday to record scratch tracks for a song. He
played so smoothly, he could have recorded the tracks in a single pass.
But I had a window open, and a dog was yelping outside. After a couple
of other glitches, like trying to get the right levels, and the chair
squeaking, my friend played through his song effortlessly.

The tune was comforting, the spirit of the song soft. The lyrics were
about love enduring through a separation. At first, I was confused,
knowing this man was married, a family man. I wondered how he could
write a song about a contrary state of emotions. He explained the song
was a benefit for veterans and their families. It made perfect sense.
Helping my friend record the song reminded me that we all have
individual gifts.

Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world that valued every individual’s
contributions? We need more appreciation, less judgment; more respect,
less criticism; more understanding and inclusiveness. Instead of
condemning a person or group that doesn’t share a cloned replica of our
identity, we should celebrate everyone’s God-given right to be who they
are.

Part of the plan of mortality is letting us learn what we’re made of.
It’s important to be yourself. Your unique contribution is part of the
magnificence of creation. Everyone’s gifts and talents are part of the
wonder that gives splendor to the world.

Each of us should be ourselves while improving the best we can be. Thank
you for all you do to make the world a spectacular creation of beauty
and wonder. You are an awesome collection of talents, perspectives, and
unique abilities. I wish I knew you better individually, and I hope your
associates appreciate you for who you are.

It would be nice to hear from you from time to time. If there’s anything
you’d like to discuss, please send an email to me at lear-@4u.net, or
you can post directly to the Readers’ Forum link below.

Best wishes in all you do.
