I tried to aim it so it would drizzle down to the working parts – like
the mineral spirits must have done.

Went through EXACTLY that same evolution as you're going through on my
'75 Eldo.
At 33,000 miles and 30 years of age, the clutch was grabbing and
sticking, making it difficult to ride in traffic. Sluice mineral
spirits in the clutch housing and let it drain, clutch would work much
better for a day or two, THEN would be worse than ever. Tried some
light lubricants and made it tolerable for about 500 miles, and it
happened again.
When you finally do take the clutch apart (what a P.I.T.A. THAT is!),
you'll find that the clutch splines are worn into almost a "v-shape" and
heavily notched. Replacing the spline will fix it ...
... but DON'T use riveted clutch plates to replace the clutch! The ones
I installed didn't last 2000 miles before the next owner took it apart
again and found the friction material loose ALREADY where the rivets
weren't holding.
On the exhaust, I have been lucky enough to find a motorcycle-friendly
machining and fabrication shop near me. They can do almost anything to
metal and are reasonable. If I had your head problem, I'd just hand
them the heads and a pair of new nuts and say "Fix!" ....
