As someone who has managed an email list, MASSBIRD, for nine years, I'd
like to comment.
Email is still imperfect. In 20 years, folks will look back and wonder how
we dealt with such imperfect software. Until then, there will be problems
with delivery between internet service providers. These problems exist
independently of email lists. I can tell you right now there are several
folks who can't email this account, so I keep a backup account.
If you are interested in moderating this list, don't let these problems
stop you. Moderating a list is challenging and fun, and I would not trade
the experiences I've had for anything. It is a great way to contribute to
the naturalist community, to support conservation and volunteerism, and to
learn some technical skills. It is not for everyone, but if you have some
experience technically, this is not difficult. You have to have some
diplomatic skills and some patience, but mainly you have to be persistent!
I also believe it is important to spread the work among us. Marj does way
too much in terms of volunteering in the area of birding and
butterflying. It makes sense to have someone new chip in and lend a hand.
So, if you are considering moderating this list, take the step! You will
not regret it.
