Demand Full Ceasefire in Falluja  Progressive Portal
 Apr 13, 2004 18:00 PDT

CONTINUING VIOLENT SIEGE OF IRAQI CITY WILL ONLY PRODUCE
MORE U.S. AND IRAQI CASUALTIES, MORE ANTI-AMERICAN RAGE
[From Education for Peace in Iraq Center <http://www.epic-usa.org>]

Although the United States government claims that a cease-fire is in
effect in the Iraqi city of Falluja, the city remains under siege, and
sources on the scene - families fleeing the fighting, aid groups
delivering food and medical supplies across the siege lines, and
Arab-language journalists who have been in the city - are unanimous in
reporting continued fighting, including firing from helicopter gunships
and attacks on clearly marked ambulances. According to the Guardian
newspaper (London), local hospitals reported the majority of the dead
were women, children and the elderly. Hospitals in the city report 600
dead and as many as 1,500 injured.

The mutilation of the bodies of four American mercenaries killed in
Falluja on March 31 was a gruesome act that has been condemned by
responsible voices on all sides of the conflict. But the heavy-handed
approach the U.S. has adopted in response can only result in more deaths
- both U.S. and Iraqi - and a continuing cycle of violence. Even British
military officials in Iraq have condemned the U.S. tactics.

Contact the White House, the Pentagon, and your legislators to demand an
immediate and complete ceasefire in Falluja.
