PENTAGON REWARDS CONTRACTOR WITH MORE INTERROGATION WORK,
EVEN THOUGH GENERAL'S REPORT SAYS EMPLOYEE KNEW ABOUT ABUSE
[From ActForChange <http://www.workingforchange.com/activism/>]
The United States Army recently announced that it has awarded a no-bid
contract worth up to $23 million to CACI International Inc. to provide
private interrogators to assist in the occupation of Iraq - even after
one of the company's interrogators was cited for involvement in the
sexual humiliation of Iraqis at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.
The contract, covering just four months, is worth $15.3 million, but
allows for two optional extensions worth up to $3.8 million each, for a
total value of $23 million. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Army
awarded the contract without competitive bidding on the grounds that
CACI's interrogators were already on the ground.
Apparently the Army wasn't bothered by the findings of its own top
investigator, Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba, that a contract interrogator
employed by CACI allowed or instructed military police at Abu Ghraib to
use interrogation techniques he "clearly knew ... equated to physical
abuse." Gen. Taguba also found that the CACI employee in question "made
a false statement to the investigation team regarding the locations of
his interrogations, the activities during his interrogations, and his
knowledge of abuses."
Call on Secretary of State Colin Powell to condemn the CACI
International Inc. contract and work to get it cancelled before
additional prisoners are put at risk of abuse and the reputation of the
United States is further damaged.
