Tell Senators: Get Us Out of Iraq  Progressive Portal

EVEN THOUGH SPENDING BILL IS ALMOST CERTAIN TO PASS,
EXRESSING STRONG OPPOSITION WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Act now - Senate vote scheduled for 6 Apr 2005

On Wed, 6 April 2005, the Senate will take up the administration's
request for an $82 billion supplemental appropriation to continue the
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since Congress approved the use of force
in Iraq in Oct 2003, tens of thousand of Iraqis and more than 1,500
American soldiers have been killed, an ancient civilization has been
devastated, and more than $200 billion in resources desperately needed
for constructive programs at home and abroad has gone down the tubes.

Meanwhile, all the arguments Bush used to frighten Congress and many
other Americans into supporting the attack on Iraq have been exposed as
the lies they were. Recent polls consistently show that a substantial
majority of Americans now recognize that the war was a mistake.

Yet Congress has remained nearly silent on the war. Refusing to engage
in any real evaluation of the strategy and tactics the executive branch
has pursued, it has failed in its obligation to be a check and balance.

It is unlikely that the supplemental appropriation bill can be stopped,
but amendments calling on the administration at least to articulate an
exit strategy are likely to be introduced and may get significant
support; at the very least, strong criticism of Bush's policies will lay
the groundwork for future legislative action to force changes.

Call your own Senators and urge them to speak out against the war; then
send a message to key Democratic leaders urging them to make their party
a real force of opposition to the administration's criminal policies.
