PRINCETON PRESERVATION GROUP
NEXT MEETING: 5PM, THURSDAY, JUNE 8, 2006
Open to the Public!
TOPIC: HISTORY AND PRESERVATION OF LANTERN SLIDES

In the 19th and early 20th century, glass magic lantern
slides with drawn and painted images provided animated projected
entertainment. In addition, photographic lantern slides, used for
educational and other purposes, are the pre-cursor to the 35mm slides
that were the most common transparencies for projection from the 1930s
until the advent of the digital projector. Many magic lantern slides
and photographic lantern slides are still found in personal and
institutional collections. This presentation will include an
opportunity to see various types of antique slides projected on a big
screen and learn about their history and preservation.

SPEAKER: ELIZABETH SHEPARD, ARCHIVIST, WEILL CORNELL MEDICAL CENTER ARCHIVES
LOCATION: MONMOUTH COUNTY LIBRARY, 125 SYMMES DRIVE, MANALAPAN
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS: http://www.visitmonmouth.com/archives/contact.asp

About the Speaker:
Elizabeth Shepard received an MA degree in Museum Studies in 1984 from
George Washington University, Washington DC. From 1985-1988, she
worked first as a postgraduate intern and later as a cataloger for a
laserdisc project at the George Eastman House (International Museum of
Photography) in Rochester, NY. It was at the Eastman House that she
developed her lifelong interest in working with photographic
collections. From 1988-1994, she was a Curator of Collections at the
Chapman Historical Museum in Glens Falls, NY.

In the summer of 1993, Ms. Shepard earned an MLS degree with a
concentration in Archival Administration/Preservation from SUNY
Albany. In 1995, she started working two part-time jobs: Local
History Archivist at Montclair Public Library; and Reference Librarian
at Bergen Community College. While at the Montclair Public Library,
she cataloged a 10,000+ item photographic collection and worked with a
vendor in placing this collection on the Internet. She has been at
Weill Cornell since October 2001.

Ms. Shepard has researched, collected, and given many programs on, the
magic lantern and lantern slides.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR LIBRARIANS: A meeting of the NJLA History &
Preservation Section will precede the PPG meeting, beginning at 3pm.
