List Name North Carolina Citizens for Safe Food (NC Safe Food)
Purpose: To educate the public about the economic, environmental, agricultural and public health implications of genetic engineering, especially in regard to agricultural, horticultural and livestock breeding practices.

More specifically, we intend to educate the public about the proven and potential dangers of genetically-engineered agricultural crops to human health and the environment. We want to see a global moratorium on all genetically-engineered foods and crops unless extensive, comprehensive, verifiable third-party tests prove that they are safe. To protect the integrity of all native plants and animals and of organic gardening and farming, we want all genetically-engineered foods and crops that have not been adequately safety-tested removed from agricultural production and current food supplies (including processors, distributors and retail outlets).

And lastly, we wish to expose inaccuracies and falsehoods in current press coverage of the genetic-engineering issue.

"... we are confronted with the most powerful technology the world has ever known, and it is being rapidly deployed with almost no thought whatsover to its consequences" Susanne Wuerthele Ph.D.

"This revolution affects the most intimate aspect of life on Earth - our own biology and the biology of our fellow creatures. If ever there was a time when we human beings had to take personal responsibility for the future ... this is it!" Jeremy Rifkin, author of "The Biotech Century: Harnessing the Gene and Remaking the World"

"This issue isn't just about the safety of our food and our environment; it's about every citizen's responsibilities - to each other, to future generations, to the survival of all species." Beth Burrows, Director of the Edmonds Institute
