As one of the best-known examples of a modern, vibrant and successful
multilingual society, Singapore is uniquely positioned to promote
academic studies of language and multilingualism. Singapore's
geographical location in a multilingual region and its highly bilingual
population make it a unique place for the study of bilingual and
multilingual issues both within Singapore and in the region. Singapore
is strategically placed within easy travel of linguistically significant
areas, e.g. India, China, South East Asia, Australia, etc.
The Division of Linguistics and Multilingual Studies is the newest
division in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The
postgraduate programme is designed with a focus on the study of language
within multilingual individuals and multilingual societies. This makes
it particularly relevant to Singapore and the region, which is
characterized by the widespread practice of bilingualism and
multilingualism. Postgraduate students enrolled in our programme will be
able to leverage on the rich research opportunities presented by our
proximity to this region and the Division's combined research strengths
in the areas listed above and in the study of the languages of Asia.
Duration of the course:
The Ph.D. degree is normally completed in three years of full-time
study, with a maximum candidature of five years of full-time, or seven
years of part-time study.
Admission Requirements:
Applicants should have a good Honours or Master's degree, or equivalent,
