A few years ago, discussing the I-69 highway with a proponent, I predicted the road would cost $2 billion to build. The completely dismissed my projection as false.
Today, INDOT opened bids for the road's very first phase had a low bid of $25.23 million for the 1.77 mile section.
At that price, $14.25 million per mile, the approximately 140 mile road will cost more than $1.995 billion to construct, a figure that does not include right of way or engineering.
Now that the first phase has been bid, and we have found the cost so high, the Governor owes Indiana citizens a real assessment of the complete cost of the highway.

Today in what is a major benchmark for the Interstate 69 project, the Indiana Department of Transportation opened bids for the contract to build the first short segment of the long-awaited interstate.
The lowest of the five bidders was Gohman Asphalt & Construction Inc. of Clarksville, Ind., which bid $25.23 million. Subject to state approvals, INDOT goes with the lowest bidder, department spokesman Andy Dietrick said. Authorization for the contractor to start work will take about a month, he said.
The contract includes construction of a 1.77-mile segment of Interstate 69 from the current I-64, north to State Road 68.
"I think it's another step in the process and another sign the highway is moving forward," said Steve Schaefer, executive director of Hoosier Voices for I-69 and vice president of the Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce. "It's good for Southwest Indiana to continue to meet these milestones."
