Greg,
A great letter.
FYI, I am active in Democrat politics and the O'Bama
people have been in touch with me relative to an
endorsement. This is one letter I want to show them,
with your consent, before I endorse anyone.
Also, please be my guest for lunch at the Southside
Democrat Club on Tuesday April 15 located at 1135 S.
Shelby St. and we can discuss further.
Regards,
Nick

As I understand it you are a liasion of Senator
Barack Obama's campaign for president of the USA.
Also, I heard that you needed verification of
Senator Obama's endorsement for extending Interstate
69. Here it is

Senator Obama says that he wants to keep jobs at
home and that he is against special interests, at
least in that he is not taking their money. I assume
that both goals are for the purpose of looking out
for our common good. It was just such a values for
which I admired my former U.S. senator the late Paul
Simon. Hence, I voted him when he ran for senator
and was very proud of him when he ran for president,
such that I wish I could have voted for him in the
Presidential Election.
The proposed extension of I-69 that we have been
fighting in Indiana and Texas, to name a couple of
places, is not the kind of project for Senator Obama
to support as senator, let alone as a president. The
main rationale for the project is to support NAFTA,
which as you and he probably know has been a
gigantic disrupting force in our economy, as well as
that of Mexico. Moreover, an enormous amount of pork
for this road project has gone to a developer that
donated to both Democratic and Republican
gubernatorial campaigns - simultaneously. These
developers (especially Bernadin, Lochmueller and
Associates) can well afford not to build the road
because they have already brought in tons of pork
from both our Republican and Democratic governors.
Please put the breaks on this juggernaut.
You will probably find some union support for the
project, but it is desparately shortsighted because
the highway supports NAFTA.
I would like to raise more objections to the
project. We are under pressures from global warming,
peak oil, the increase in endangered species and
depletion of needed wildlands (this project is
planned to be rammed through Patoka National
Wildlife Refuge), and budgetary shortfalls.
Moreover, what money is set aside for the project
came from Spain and Austrailia from leasing our
tollway for less in the long run than Indiana would
have brought in by not leasing it. This scheme was
orchestrated by Governor Daniels, who knows it
displeases Democrats and Hoosiers who care about our
common good over the good of special interests.
These pressures all reflect that this project makes
no sense at all, except again for the good of
special interests that have little, if any, regard
for the common good. By the way, Republican Governor
Daniels is running for re-election this year. Please
do not throw him a political life jacket by
endorsing this highway.
By doing the right thing, coming out against this
project, Senator Barack Obama would give us someone
who we could vote for in the Indiana Primary and the
Presidential Election. Not only would I vote for
Senator Obama, if he does issue such a statement, I
also promise to vigorously campaign for him in
Indiana in anticipation of our Presidential Primary.
I campaigned for another esteemed federal legislator
the late Representative Julia Carson. I campaigned
for her in 2002 or 2004 because she spoke out
against this very same highway project and it was
uncertain whether she would win that year.
Please tell Senator Obama to make me proud, proud
like I felt and feel about Senator Paul Simon and
Representative Julia Carson.
Sincerely,
Greg Buck
