Great Steep Hills Climbs In Our Backyard  Chuck Bramwell
 Jun 12, 2007 22:43 PDT

Hi ...

We've got some great steep hill climbs right in our backyard in Irvine
and Newport coast!!

I went on an interesting climbing training ride from my House in
University Park in Irvine:

Yale Loop (3 Mile flat warm up) – Up Ridgeline – Shady Canyon - Summit
Park - Newport Coast - Down to PCH - Up Newport Coast - Vista Ridge
(Closest to Ocean) - Down Ridge Park - Down Pelican Hill - Up Pelican
Hill - Up Ridge Park - Down Vista Ridge - Down Newport Coast to PCH - Up
Newport Coast – Up Vista Ridge - Down Ridge Park - Down Newport Coast -
Up Summit Park – Up Starcrest - Down Ridgeline

I climbed 4,442 Feet in 38.9 Miles and found the following:

Ridgeline (South from University to Turtle Rock Drive) is 1.86 Miles
rising 393 Feet for an Average Gradient of 4.00% with a Max Gradient of
11%.

Starcrest (South from Turtle Rock Drive) is .71 Miles rising 228 Feet
for an Average Gradient of 6.08% with a Max Gradient of 10%.

Summit Park (South from Shady Canyon) is 1.81 Miles rising 377 Feet for
an Average Gradient of 3.94% with a Max Gradient of 12%.

Newport Coast from the Irvine Side is 4.40 Miles rising 594 Feet for an
Average Gradient of 2.56% with a Max Gradient of 6%.

Newport Coast from the Ocean Side is 1.95 Miles rising 529 Feet for an
Average Gradient of 5.14% with a Max Gradient of 6%.

Pelican Hill (when it was all the way open) was 2.30 Miles rising 421
Feet for an Average Gradient of 3.47% with a Max Gradient of 10%.

Vista Ridge (Closest Steep Climb off Newport Coast to Ocean) is 1.25
Miles rising 427 Feet for an Average Gradient of 6.47% with a Max
Gradient of 15%.

Ridge Park (Furthest Steep Climb off Newport Coast from Ocean) is .91
Miles rising 429 Feet for an Average Gradient of 8.93% with a Max
Gradient of 14%.

Summit Park (East from Turtle Ridge) is 1.10 Miles rising 326 Feet for
an Average Gradient of 5.61% with a Max Gradient of 12%.

We’re lucky to have so many good training climbs right in our back
yard!!

Best regards,

Chuck
