Sounded like you had a great ride Saturday.
I was totally 100% blown away by everything about the Terrible Two
Saturday. I’ve never seen such great Rest Stops with Fresh Fruits,
Awesome Cookies, and a full pharmacy of powders, drugs, and performance
enhancements. So many SAG cars and motorcycles, I couldn’t believe!!
Ice everywhere!! Everywhere. Ice makes a HUGE difference when it’s
hot. HUGE!! Tons of Sodas near the end really gave us a boost. It was
just phenomenal … the whole deal. I’ve noticed a huge improvement
everytime I ride the TT … from 98 to 2000 to 03 to 07 … just huge
improvements and I tip my hat to the Santa Rosa Cycling Club.
We had overcast skies until the base of the Geysers around Mile 70 which
then kept the heat down in the afternoon on the Skaggs climbs to 95-100
degrees in the afternoon. It got plenty hot on those climbs but it
wasn't a thermonuclear meltdown. Then it cooled down when we made it
Highway 1 at Stewart's Point.
I managed to take about 150 photos on the bike and will have to get them
up on the web. It was hard to impossible to take shots on the steep
roads because most all of those climbs are over 10% gradients. It was
also impossible to take shots on the descents because they were likewise
steep with shaded potholes so you had to really watch where you were
driving on the descents. The photos I did catch are pretty fun and
showcase how beautiful the course truly is through redwood forests.
The Saturday Centuries really paid off of those steep climbs that just
kept coming. I was really glad I road up to the Mount Baldy Ski Lifts
the prior two weeks because the climbs on the Terrible Two are similar
to the Ski Lifts ... lots of front wheel lift off and most of them
exposed to the sun.
Good luck to everyone on the Grand Tour this Saturday. I'm not riding
that one because it's our Wedding Anniversary plus my legs are pretty
wiped out from the TT.
Thanks Paul for leading the Oceanside Century. You're going to be
tempted to go out too fast on Saturday morning on the rollers North of
Malibu. You'll be glad if you leave some in the tank for the last 50
miles when you're coming back South into Malibu!! There have also been
some paceline accidents in those first 30 miles on the Grand Tour so be
sure to not overlap wheels and give everyone plenty of distance because
it's early in the morning and you don't know the experience level of
those in the paceline with you. If in doubt, pull out and ride that
section solo or with a small group. Then give it full gas on the last
50 miles down the coast!!

Team,
Turned out to be a great day, down to Oceanside and back. We had 10
riders
leaving the Square, but very shortly picked up 4 more riders. We knew
we
were in for trouble when Dan Hoopes showed up at the Square on his
single.
(not that he
is slower with BRi on the tandem) I made the mistake of doing the 1st
seven
miles up front with Dan, his warm-up just about wore me out. One of
these
days I will learn what "warm-up" means, and hang back!
Dan & Doris, Dan H, and Charlie made up the lead group down and back,
and
ended up with a 18.8 mph average, way to go team! On the way back I
hope
they were able to
catch a glimpse of the regatta going on off the coast of Capo Beach.
Us
mere
mortals came in with 17.3 mph average, and we did see the regatta. Rene
did
a great job pulling all day.
All in all it was a great day, weather treated us well.
I hope all had as good a time as I.
Chuck, how did the Terrible Two go?
