Article of the month:
WHEN WILL AGGRESSION END?
By
Odete M. Bigote
In the Bible, God promises us salvation.
What do we have to be saved from? If we were all living in peace,
understanding and loving each other, would God still promise us salvation?
The French author, Marquis de Sade (1740-1814), kept many women in his
basement. He used them to practice his sexual fantasies. When the women escaped, and
showed their scars to the populace, de Sade was arrested. His writings were
confiscated and some of his books are still forbidden in France. His wife ended
up in a convent. De Sade, who was also sentenced to death for his acts of
violence, escaped from prison several times, and continued to commit crimes. He
died in a mental institution. His erotic writings gave his name to sadism:
excessive aggression towards a sexual partner.
The question we all ask when confronted with aggression is always:"Why?"
As a child, de Sade was forced by his mother to eat his favorite pet duck.
"It is my mother, I want to kill."
What an admirable excuse to perpetuate crimes. Hostility towards a parent, or
anyone else is the most common emotion all human beings share, yet most of us
do not commit acts of violence.
We do, however, have something else in common: pain. It is true that most of
us hardly feel pain, while others feel it almost all their lives, like de
Sade.
There are different types of pain, as there are of fear, anger and even lack
of love. They all have something in common: the need to be reversed.
What de Sade did to himself is exactly what mankind does collectively: he did
not use his powerful thought system to go inwardly to alleviate his pain by
reversing it to true love and understanding. We did that collectively when we
choose to murder Jesus. The French did it too when they allowed Joan of Arc to
burn to death. We elect, and allow totalitarian governments to stay in power.
When fear, anger, hate and therefore lack of love and understanding dominate
even a small portion of mankind, it leads to violence in the form of anarchy,
and even war.
But, then, there is always a powerful thought system within all of us ready
to help us if we ask.
The Spanish painter, Zurbaran, describes in one of his paintings (1638) a
battle between Spaniards and Moors at El Sotillo. The Spaniards were saved by the
Virgin and Child's light which illuminated the area where the Moors were
hiding during the night.
The potential for aggression is within all of us; it is part of the script we
are born with. The potential to reverse aggression is also within all of us,
but we have to have the will to change. We have to focus inwardly and ask for
help.
Projection, such as the hostility de Sade felt against his mother, does not
help anyone; it only delays the healing of our pain.
De Sade considered himself an atheist. There are no laws preventing atheist
from focusing within and learning to let go of pain, and be at peace.
God gave us light: a metaphor to help us look within. It is when we try to
remember the light within all of us that we transform ourselves from caterpillar
to butterfly: a long journey but a short life.
This is the salvation God promises us. Aggression will end when all of us
remember to ask: Let there be light!
And there is light.
