                                                    THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST
                                                        NOTHING HAS CHANGED
                                                                       By
                                                             Odete M. Bigote

The film "The Passion of the Christ" has many messages, one of them is that
the more we think we advance, the more we learn that nothing has changed. All
advances of science and technology are nothing but an opened door for us to
rediscover our need for love and understanding. Fear, hate, anger and even
jealousy are alive and well.

Crucifixions are always happening. Some of us impose terrible crucifixions on
ourselves, others impose it on others. Recently, in Sudan, a Christian child
was crucified by his slave owner. He was set free by one of the slave owner's
children, and sent back to his birth town. He is handicapped for life. There
is no way his "owner" can be prosecuted because he acted within the laws of
slavery.

In the Passion of the Christ, Barabbas, a murderer was chosen to be freed,
and Jesus was crucified instead. Barabbas will go down in history as not only
the luckiest but the happiest of all the figures. He sticked his tongue out, and
laughed at the guards, as he was set free. This is still happening today;
there are millions of Barabbas laughing at us. The difference is that 2000 years
ago they did not have defense lawyers repeating over and over that " This man
is innocent."

By contrast, the only character that seemed more simple-minded was Herod
Antipas, the Jewish governor. He looked and acted like an idiot and a fool. He let
Jesus go free; he would not condemn him, because he considered Jesus "a
fool." This is a great example of projection; an escape goat for our precarious
human condition. Herod recognizes his need of love and understanding. "What can
you do for me?" He asks Jesus,"Can you help me?" These are the type of
questions that most of us would ask Jesus, if he showed up today.

The Roman Governor, Pilate, did not want to crucify Jesus. In the end, he
washed his hands, meaning, he wanted to have nothing to do with the crucifixion.
Then, he declared "I'm innocent of the blood of this man." And speaking to the
High Priests, Pilate said; "You crucify him." He cleverly passed the buck.

Fear caused Peter and other disciples to run away from Jesus. Judas, was so
consumed by jealousy and greed that he committed suicide, after he felt
remorseful.

The High Priests, also called Rabbis, always wanted to crucify Jesus: they
envied his strength and his capacity to love. They feared Jesus' power would
influence the populace against them. Just like today, the populace was split
between crucifixion or not. And just like today, the populace was easily
manipulated by the High Priests who persuaded them to fear Jesus instead of loving him.

In spite of the fact that some women wanted Jesus crucified, many were
grief-stricken. Claudia, Pilate's wife, converted and risked her life when she gave
Mary towels to wipe Jesus' blood from the ground. Mary Magdalene, who had
committed adultery, always followed Jesus, and His mother, Mary was always with
him in love, awe, pain and admiration.

In the end, at least one Rabbi seemed to have changed his mind when he saw
the earth shaking, and the sky opening up, as Jesus died.

It is easy to see the part that our emotions played in this scenario, and
still do, today. It is easy to manipulate people based on their emotions,
specially fear.

All of us played a very important role in this event, and the role goes on
because our desperate need for love and understanding has not changed.
