God's love for us is a mystery and a joy, balanced by the mystery and sorrow

ARTICLE OF THE MONTH:

                                                ROMANCE IN THE BIBLE

Once I had a friend from India. We used to discuss social issues related to
family and marriage. To my great surprise, he told me there are areas in India
where, to this date, they do not allow love marriages. All marriages must be
arranged. Then, I wondered when did romance start among human beings, and when
was love forbidden.

Since then, I've been fortunate to be studying the Bible. I'm flabbergasted
by the stories, the events and the prophecies. The story of Jacob, Abraham's
grandson, Genesis 25:50,
portrays the first example of a man struggling to marry the woman he loves;
Rachel, his cousin.

Genesis was channeled to Moses in the Sinai Desert. Some individuals consider
this type of writing "fiction", while others learn about the importance of
our communication with God. Still others, do archeological research to see what
they can find to help us understand the word of God. There are written
documents, about 3,500 years old, which refer to a great flood that happened long
before their time. Artifacts have been found in areas mentioned in the Bible as
important cities.

Fiction or not, the Bible has been on the bestsellers list for centuries and
will continue to be so. The Author of Genesis is an awesome Higher
Intelligence, not only because of His words, but also because of His prophecies, and His
form of communication. We are free to
call this Author whatever we want, but since the Bible calls It "God" that is
the word I use.

Who was Jacob? A deceiver. As a matter of fact, that is exactly what his name
means. In those days, parents used to choose babies' names to express an e
vent at that time. Jacob had a twin brother, Esau, who was first born. Jacob was
born with his hand taking "hold on Esau's heel," Genesis 25:26, figuratively
this means "he deceives."

Jacob deceived Esau by taking his birthright from him, and later his
blessing. As a consequence, Esau wanted to kill him. Jacob was forced to run away.
Somewhere in the desert, he fell asleep on a stone and received a message from
God "... the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed."
Genesis 28:13. And God went on to say "And, behold, I am with thee and will
keep thee in all places whither thou goest; and will
bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done
that which I have spoken to thee of." Jacob understood that, one day, he'd
return safely to his father's home.

He listened and faithfully followed God's instructions. He ended up at his
uncle's home, some 400 miles away. His uncle, Leban, had two daughters: Leah,
the oldest, and Rachel, the youngest. Jacob fell in love with Rachel as soon as
he met her by the well. He immediately kissed her. He asked her father's
permission to marry her. Since Jacob had no possessions of his own, he arranged to
work for free for 7 years to win her hand. When the fortunate day arrived,
Laban, gave a wedding ceremony. He waited until after sunset to send Leah instead
of Rachel to sleep with Jacob. Since it was very dark, and there was no
electricity, Jacob did not discover who she was until the next morning when the sun
came out.

His uncle's excuse was that his oldest daughter had to marry first. Then, he
told Jacob not to worry, that after the bridal week was over, he would allow
Rachel to marry him. Of course, his nephew had to work 7 more years. Even so,
Jacob accepted.
He felt no revenge. He was aware of God's promises, and he had faith.

Indeed, after 14 years of working without pay, and once on his own, Jacob
prospered so much that he became the envy of his uncle who told him to leave and
go back home. But Jacob waited 6 years for God's permission to make such a
move. Finally, God told him to get ready and leave that country and return to the
land of his birth. Years later, Jacob became the father of 12 tribes in
Israel, just as it was prophesied before he was born.

Going back home meant he was going to meet his twin brother, Esau. Jacob
decided to send a messenger to his brother with gifts to let him know he was
coming back. The messenger returned with the news that Esau was going to meet Jacob
with 400 men.
Jacob was afraid that might cause a war. After all, he had Rachel with him
and his whole family. He prayed and asked for God's guidance. Apparently, he
wrestled all night with an angel so, his name was changed from Jacob to Israel
which means "the one who struggles with God."

When the brothers finally met, they embraced and kissed, and so did Rachel,
all the children and all relatives exchanged gifts and hugs. A feast followed
which was a celebration of love, forgiveness and understanding.

Here is the story of a man who was a deceiver but was also deceived.

"As we sow, so shall we reap."

Jacob was faithful to his love for Rachel. In his rush to ask for her hand,
Jacob did not ask for God's guidance, he acted on his own and, of course, he
did not mind the consequences. On the other hand, he was also obedient to his
inner voice: God's. He was human, and like all of us, he had his faults yet,
God, who never fails to understand us, rewarded him as it was prophesied.

INDEED, ALL OUR ACTIONS ARE CARVED BY GOD UNTO HIS ONGOING PLAN.

Rachel died years later giving birth to a son named Ben. Jacob built a
monument in her honor.

The power of love is as old as humans were created on earth.

Love is everywhere and in everyone, no one can forbid love but we may have to
fight for it.
