In our society salt is an important ingredient. Sometimes we complain; too
much salt,or too little salt, what is the matter with this dish?Salt can also
heal: if you gargle with hot water and salt, your sore throat will heal.
Obviously,salt has some value.But the value we attribute to it, is nothing
compared with what the Bible teaches us.
"You are the salt of the earth."
Matt 5:l3
The Bible has some references to salt, which are used as a symbol of our
capacity to help season the earth with wit,spirit and even humor. However,in
order to do that we must "believe" and, that means, we must understand who is
working behind the scenes to help us "season" the earth.In other words, we do
not do this "seasoning" alone.
There is a remarkable event in the Scriptures which I had heard about prior
to my studying the Bible.Such an event was never properly explained to me.
Lot, Abraham's nephew,lived in Sodom, a town God decided to destroy because
it was corrupted. But God wanted to save Lot and his whole family in
consideration for Abraham, so He sent some angels to tell the Lot family to leave
town and not look back. However, "Lot's wife looked back as she was following
behind him, and she turned into a pillar of salt."Gen 10:26.
What a beautiful image of the power of an Higher Intelligence, that is
beyond intelligence and comprehension.
Lot's wife seemed reluctant to leave, that is, she did not want to let go of
the past. The Bible does not mention her name but she portraits a human
condition that most of us suffer from:to let go of the past. Indeed, we may feel
pain,sorrow,guilt and even joy:it is hard to let go.That is one of the reasons
why therapists, psychologist and psychiatrist do so well these days.
God's message to Lot's family was: Let go of the past, follow ME and I'll
show you a better way. And He did this immediately, by turning her into a pillar
of salt to remind all of us that in the end,we are not our past but the salt
of the earth. We must not interpret this event as simply her death, we must
see it also as an example of that happens when we disobey:we are immediately
reminded that we are free from the past when we follow Him. This is a
transformation from caterpillar to butterfly. Then, we go on flavoring the earth
with salt.
