ARTICLE OF THE MONTH:
RUTH AND RENATA
BY
ODETE MARTINS BIGOTE
Renata knew me since I was born. She lived nearby. I grew up watching her
ringing our bell, almost every evening, and come in to have dinner with us.
Renata was poor.
My family offered to take her in and help her, but she refused. She chose to
sell lemons and pencils in the streets of Lisbon. She became a peddler. One
day, she fell in love. She told me the goods news when she saw me and, for the
first time, she refused to accept my financial help. "I don't need it, Miss,
the man I'm living with has a good job."
But that situation did not last long: in a few years he, too, became a
peddler. They were always together selling lemons and pencils. Love for each other
never faltered. She had plenty of clothes that people gave her. She never
washed them; she used to wear them until they were very dirty then, she'd
throw them away, and switch to new ones.
Renata did not know that she was building her own cobweb.
The last time I saw Renata, she, and her male companion were very sick. She
died soon after our last encounter. Her friend died a few days later.
"There is nothing good in my flesh." Confessed Apostle Paul. This may be
true, however, we've the capacity to choose peace or war. Peace can only be
achieved through love, and understanding of our relationship with our Higher
Self. We do not know if Renata and her companion found peace. But, it was
certainly love that kept them together:"Until death do us part."
"There is he who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; there is he who makes
himself poor, yet has great riches." Proverbs 13:7
In the Old Testament there is a book entitled "Ruth." It is the story of two
poor widows, Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi. They chose to stay together
after the death of their husbands.
It was love that kept them together in spite of all the difficulties they
had to endure. In order to survive, Ruth, had to pick up grain left over in
the field of a wealthy farmer, named Boaz. This was called "Gleaning." The
grain was left on purpose, so that the poor people could get something to eat.
Boaz eventually married Ruth. They had a child named Obed, who became the
father of Jesse. Then, Jesse, became the father of David, the famous king of
Israel. Consequently, Ruth was David's great grand-mother, which led to the
lineage of the Messiah.
LIKE SPIDERS, RUTH, AND ALL OF US, BUILD COBWEBS WITH ITS CIRCLES LEADING
TO A UNIFIED CENTER.
Ruth and Naomi lived at a time of great turmoil: wars, diseases, starvation.
Yet, they never lost faith in God - a God they knew nothing about until
later on in their lives. Both women were not Jewish. Naomi taught Ruth about the
God of Israel. In the end, they were rewarded. God is always at work in this
world; He gives all of us choices of tasks that need to be accomplished in
order to fulfill our mission, which we may never know what it is.
In spite of the fact that Renata lived in Europe, in the 20th century, and
Ruth lived in Israel, around 12th century BC, they had the same feelings,
dedication and understanding which they expressed in their love for others.
LOVE, THEREFORE, HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SPACE AND TIME.
LOVE JUST IS.
No wonder we learn that we come from Love and go back to Love.
We continue to build cobwebs. We spin and spin. We go through many circles,
in order to return to the center - to unity, which we dream we've separated
from.
