ARTICLE OF THE MONTH:
CIRCUMCISION
I was glad my friend Peter was finally getting married. I flew to Europe to
attend his wedding.
"Finding the right girl is not easy," he used to tell me.
I knew his fiancee was stiff-necked, and I wondered what the wedding
ceremony would be like.
After the religious ceremony, celebrated by two Catholic priests, we went to
a large hotel room to eat and drink. I immediately helped myself to a plate
full of little hot dogs wrapped up in slices of bacon. Then, I heard women
murmuring "circumcision". I followed them but they started to talk about the
hot dogs, and I moved to another group.
"The bridegroom is not going to be happy tonight!" said another woman. I
stopped eating the hot dogs. I wondered if circumcision had anything to do with
the bridegroom and I enquired.
"What, you don't know? Answered one of the women. "The bride will not allow
the bridegroom to sleep with her tonight."
"What happened?"I asked.
"She discovered that Peter is not circumcised."
"Oh,when did she discover that?" I enquired, visibly shaken.
"Just a few minutes ago!"
The plate I was holding with the hot dogs fell on the floor. "Poor Peter,"
said I, " He waited so long for this day."
This marriage ended in tragedy, years later, when Peter found out he had a
terminal disease. By that time, they had four children, and when he told his
wife about his diagnosis, she informed him that she did not love him any
longer. She asked for a divorce, and went to live with her partner.
We usually understand circumcision to be the cutting off the foreskin of the
male reproductive organ. It is usually done when the baby is 8 days old, as
described in Genesis by Moses, and it is a form of cleansing. We also learn
from the Bible that circumcision does not mean just the cutting off the
foreskin with a knife, but it is a symbol to remind us to clean our hearts. True
circumcision is of the heart, not of the flesh, and God does that, not a knife.
ALL OF US HAVE TO LEARN TO HAVE FAITH AND ALLOW OUR HEARTS TO BE CIRCUMCISED.
Since mankind was having difficulty accepting the laws written by Moses, God
sent his Son about 2000 years ago, to show us that "In Him you were also
circumcised, with the circumcision made without hands." Col 2:11. Jesus cleans
our hearts by forgiving our mistakes.
God made this planet and put us here so that we can experience His form of
cleansing, which is achieved with love and understanding beyond our
comprehension. He builds nations so that we can collectively share the same
experiences. He gave us enemies, and said "They shall be thorns in your side"... Judges
2:3. At that time, about 1050 B.C. God was, of course, referring to Israel,
and their lack of obedience.
BUT ISRAEL'S DISOBEDIENCE IS A REMINDER OF OUR HUMAN CONDITION STILL TODAY.
God is in charge of all our battles, within and without. He will not drive
out our enemies until we allow him to clean our hearts. God gives us thorns so
that we can experience their removal but only with His help.
Peter and his wife are like two nations at war, with one visibly weaker than
the other. Both of them are enduring their own thorns, while God awaits His
turn to remove them.
