Thanks for a great 2009 season and see you in 2010!
2010 Road Calendar
The 2009 road season was capped off by the PCA Awards Banquet last Sunday a=
nd the focus has quickly shifted to the 2010 season. Today I contacted ever=
y promoted who held a 2009 USAC permitted road event in PA to begin compili=
ng a 2010 calendar. I am hoping to have a first draft of the new calendar f=
or public consumption by November 15th.
2010 PCA Membership Drive
Every year my goal is to have all PA based USAC registered teams become par=
t of the PCA family. For the past few years I=E2=80=99ve contacted every te=
am via email promoting the PCA and the benefits of joining this growing org=
anization. This year will be no different however I will follow up the emai=
ls with phone calls to current PCA member teams thanking them for supportin=
g cycling in PA and contact teams that are not part of the PCA family. Ther=
e are a few teams that I have been pursuing for many years including High R=
oad and South Mountain Cycles. If you know, and I am sure some of you do, r=
iders on those teams give them a shout about the PCA and what we do.
In an effort ensure all PCA teams are current for the January governance me=
eting I will have the BikeReg site online by November 1st to kick off the 2=
010 PCA Membership Drive. Almost 55% of the 2009 PCA member clubs joined or=
renewed their membership online via BikeReg last year. For 2010 I=E2=80=99=
d love to see that reach a minimum of 80%. It=E2=80=99s fast and easy and h=
elps support the PCA/BikeReg rebate program which will focus on junior deve=
lopment in 2010. I look forward to having your team on board for 2010!
How to Make Your Race More Fiscally Sound
While the economy is slowing recovery from this most troublesome recession =
costs of promoting bicycle races continue to rise along with everything els=
e. There are two fairly simple ways to lower your costs and will in turn pr=
ovide a safer race:
Co-Hosting
Size does matter. If your club struggles finding people to work registratio=
n and marshal the race course co-host your event with another club. USAC al=
lows multiple clubs to sponsor a race and I am sure there are teams in your=
area that would step up to help. I can think of quite a few clubs that pro=
mote races with their contemporaries including Chester County Velo, Human Z=
oom Cycling, Dynaflo, LWA, and Gotham Cyclists just to name a few. If you n=
eed permit help or contact information email Dave Miller (hwy-@ptd.net) or=
myself. Spread the word to other teams on your next group ride. Someone ma=
y say YES!
Become an Official
Too often I hear promoters lamenting about the race official=E2=80=99s fees=
and travel costs. The dedicated group of USAC officials that work races in=
PA are there because of their love for the sport and to ensure the integri=
ty and safety of the race. If you want to help your team manage their race =
promotion finances become an official and work the team=E2=80=99s events. I=
t=E2=80=99s a great way to experience the =E2=80=9Cother side=E2=80=9D of t=
he sport and you get to wear neat blue and khaki clothing and blow a whistl=
e. It=E2=80=99s easy to become an official and the opportunities to grow yo=
ur officiating skills and work more events are endless. If you are interest=
ed in being part of a great team of officials contact Ellen Dorsey (ehdorse=
y-@fast.net). She=E2=80=99ll be so excited! =20
