Juneteenth is celebrated throughout the United States. It symbolizes
for what many African Americans what the Fourth of July symbolizes
for other Americans. This year AAHGS-PGCM, will present a series of
workshops and a panel discussion for beginning genealogists to
commemorate this historic event. This year's Juneteenth celebration
will serve as a historical milestone to remind Prince Georgians and
all those in attendance of the triumph of the human spirit over the
cruelties of slavery. A special children's session has been designed
to introduce the county's youth to combining history with genealogy
and preservation.

Author and lecturer Carroll R. Gibbs will illuminate the rich
contributions of African Americans to our society and its culture
through his lectures, exhibits, and films, will serve as the keynote
speaker. The workshops will focus on resources, research methods,
and historical events designed to enlighten the participants on the
history of Juneteenth and the tracing of their roots. Experienced
educators, historians and genealogists will provide lectures on the
Underground Railroad in Prince George's County, Slave Genealogy,
Interview Techniques, Research Depositories and more.
Representatives from the National Archives and Records
Administration, the Maryland State Archives, the Smithsonian
Institute, Howard University, the Daughters of the American
Revolution, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and AAHGS'
