Garland Ganter, General Manager of Pacifica radio station KPFT in
Houston and the man who shut down Berkeley's KPFA in 1999, has resigned,
according to KPFA political commentator (and former Pacifica national
news analyst) Larry Bensky.
Ganter came to Berkeley in 1999, had KPFA news and public affairs
staff arrested for trespassing at their own desks (along with dozens
of KPFA supporters), shut down the station, and piped in programming
from Houston to enforce a "gag rule" against discussing Pacifica's
leadership crisis, prompting several days of protest and civil
disobedience, including a march featuring more than 7,000 people
including many civic and political leaders. Eventually, Pacifica
relented and allowed KPFA to re-open without censorship.
Most recently, after the settlement of several lawsuits seeking to
wrest control of Pacifica from corporate-Democratic Party raiders,
KPFT's Local Advisory Board (LAB) attempted to appoint Ganter to the
national board as its representative, in violation of Pacifica by-laws
and the settlement agreement. Alameda County Superior Court Judge
Ronald Sabraw rejected the attempt, and KPFT's LAB appointed Barney
Goodman, who resigned after his first board meeting.
Details regarding Ganter's exit, and the naming of any new KPFT LAB
representative, are not yet available.
