RE: first version of Nightmare Abbey  Patrick Spedding

On the subject of 1st edd., the library here at
the Uni. of Tasmania, Hobart, does have the 1st ed.
of Crotchet Castle (which I have had the pleasure
of reading) in its rare book room, and the first time
I read Gryll Grange was when I borrowed the book from
the general collection many years ago; but, unfortun-
ately, it is now assessed as either lost or stolen.

When I was at the University of Tasmania the first edition of _Gryll
Grange_ was still there: I am sorry to hear that it is missing. From my
experience I would say (1) the library would never have placed it in the
Rare Books section if requested and (2) they lost it. Fortunately, I now
have my own copy, and firsts of _Maid Marian_ and _Crotchet Castle_. I
would like _Nightmare Abbey_ too, and to be able to help David Rosen, but
the copy I have been watching on the net for the last two years (at £1,500
by James Burmester), which I thought wildly overpriced, has been replaced
by an even more expensive one (c.£2,200 by FineArt)! At this rate it could
be a long time (read: never) before I find one I can afford.
