Greetings from Informal

The following is the blurb which I recently posted to the various media

about GB£0.37, and US$0.57.

International Conference musters Peacockians

The International Conference on Thomas Love Peacock
(with the support of the School of History and Classics,
Univerity of Tasmania) will be held at the University of
Tasmania, Hobart, from Thurday July 4th to Sunday July 7th.

Most of the papers will be presented during the Friday and
Saturday sessions.

The cost of registration is $20.00 ($15.00 concession); this
will include refreshments and cheaper access to other functions.

There will be a symposium, on the subject "What Good Has Come
from America" in the Senior Common Room of Jane Franklin Hall
on the evening of July 4th. The cost, for a three-course dinner and
all beverages, will be $35.00 for delegates (and $40.00 for those not
registered).
The maximum number of symposiasts is twenty; so, those who wish
to attend, should book as early as possible by writing to:
sympo-@thomaslovepeacock.net.

There will be a lunch at the University Club, from noon Friday;
those who wish to attend, should write to:
lun-@thomaslovepeacock.net.

On Friday afternoon, Sean McGlynn will have his paper on
Peacock’s medievalism read by proxy.
He is the author of The Invasion of England 1216 (Sutton,
forthcoming 2002) and By Sword and Fire (Cassell, forthcoming
2002);and co-author of Atlas of Medieval History (Cassell, 1998).

One of the University of Tasmania Classics Ph.D students,
Frank Strk, will present his paper on Peacock’s Exploration of
the Euphrates River of Antiquity on Friday evening at about 6.00 pm.

On Saturday, the 6th, the world's leading Peacockian scholar,
Prof. N.A. Joukovsky, of Penn State University, will
present a paper by video link at a breakfast seminar
at Hadley's Hotel. The cost will be $22 (and $27.00 for those
who are not registered.). To book, write to:
break-@thomaslovepeacock.net.

On Saturday evening, there will be a dinner, at Hadleys
Hotel, with Dr Philip Mead, of the English Dept. leading the
discussion on the worth of Peacock's poetry.
Dr Mead is a senior lecturer at the University of Tasmania
and the editor of "Australian Literary Studies in the 21st Century"
and co-editor (with John Tranter) of "The Penguin Book of Modern
Australian Poetry" (Penguin, 1991).
The cost of the dinner will be $35.00 a person ($40.00 for others).
To book, write to: din-@thomaslovepeacock.net.

The Saturday afternoon session of the conference
will be of special interest to those interested in feminist
theory, because there will be three papers presented on Peacock's
advanced, liberal view of female education and woman’s place in
society: Dr. Katherine Levin, from Minnesota, will present her paper
on "Marriage, Rhetoric and Money in Peacock’s Fiction"; and
two post-graduate students currently working on theses related to
Peacock, María del Rocío Ramos Ramos, from the University of
Huelva, and Kathy Elaine Nixon, from the University of Virginia
will have papers read by proxy---they may be able to
answer questions by way of the internet.

[My conference paper, by the way, will focus on how critics have
misunderstood Peacock: for instance, though Peacock makes it clear in
various works (such as his unfinished "Essay on Fashionable Literature")
that he has little regard for literature ‘which aims only to amuse and
must be very careful not to instruct’, critics will still insist that
Peacock's novels are little more than light reading; his novels are,
perversely, often accused of lacking form when, in reality, the novels
are marked by artful and complex design including, at times, thematic
symmetry. It is, however, artful to conceal art, and Peacock does this
so well that even well-disposed critics miss the art.]
