2. Ninth Query:
--------------------------
Do you hold your meetings for business in a spirit of worship? Do you
seek the guidance of God, rather than the acceptance of a previously?
Do you help one another in your search for unity by speaking briefly and
without repetition? Are you tender and considerate of differing views,
coming to a decision only when you have, with Divine assistance, found
a sense of unity?
--------------------------
3. Prayer
--------------------------
In the name of the God who once spoke as Jehovah to Abraham and
accompanied the Jewish people through the
   centuries and all their sufferings
In the name of the same God who sent through
Jesus Christ the joyful gospel to the Christians
In the name of the one who as Allah called
Mohammed as his prophet and spoke through him
In the name of the one who spoke through
Buddha and taught him eternal peace
In the name of the one who is the origin of all
being and, as such, the creator of the universe,
of all life and all love:
may he bless you and guard you
as man and woman,
as a couple.

Given to Irwin Abrams by Henning von Gieke, this was written for a
Christian Muslim wedding by Henning's brother, Gerhart von Gierke who
died recently.

Translated from the German by Henning. Irwin says, “I like the
universalist spirit, . The Buddhists do not believe in God...there are
those in our Meeting community who would object to the gender of the
divinity who did all this speaking. I would hope, however, that all our
readers would note that this was written for a Moslem-Christian wedding
and that nobody is suggesting that our readers subscribe to all the
words any more than we do when we sing together some of the old hymns we
do before Meeting for Worship.

well lived."

7. The Hydes in Northern Ireland
--------------------------
From David Hyde and family

Susan is descended from the Hinshaws as well as other families who were
part of Grange Friends Meeting in the early 18th Century. Grange
Meeting is in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, between Moy and
Dungannon.   It was founded in 1660. Also descended from Grange Friends
is Robina Chapman (nee Bell) of Newry, Northern Ireland. Susan and
Robina are cousins through the Bell line. Ross and Robina Chapman were
our hosts. (Incidentally, the Chapmans knew Bill and Elinor Preis when
they all lived in New Zealand.)   On July 13 we attended Grange Meeting
with the Chapmans.

There are two meeting houses at Grange which stand at right angles to
each other facing the same parking lot. The "Large Meeting House" (built
in 1816) is where meeting-for-worship is held. It resembles
Waynesville's White Brick Meeting House architecturally. The "Old
Meeting House" (built in 1756) is where we gathered for tea and biscuits
after meeting. Most Grange Friends are farmers (as has always been the
case). Attendance was light (twenty or so), but, as is the case here,
people tend to be away during the summer.   Theologically they are
similar to Ohio Conservative Friends; a silent meeting, but
Christ-centered. A common practice there is for someone to request a
hymn during meeting-for-worship. The pianist then plays it, and
Friends sing.

After meeting we introduced ourselves. The acting clerk read our
traveling minute and endorsed it. After meeting Ross and Robina showed
us around the cemetery next to the Large Meeting House. A common
surname was "Pike", and it seems that Susan is descended from a Ruth
Pike. Ross told a story from a couple centuries ago.   Someone had a
grudge against the Pike family. He told the British soldiers (the local
authority at the time) that this was a family of trouble-makers. The
soldiers paid the Pikes a visit and searched their house.

Since it was a Quaker house, they found nothing significant. Then the
family asked the reason for the intrusion. "We were told we would find
a lot of pikes (weapons) here" was the answer. The cemetery next to the
Large Meeting House has no burials older than around 1850, which is too
recent for Susan's ancestors. For earlier burials we had to go to the
Friends' Burial Ground west of Grange.

Circa 1640 the Battle of Red Ford was fought on the banks of the Rhone
River in County Tyrone (not to be confused with the French River with
the same name). It was one of many battles for Irish independence from
England. The dead were buried together in an unmarked plot. The sight
was given the inglorious name of the "Beef Tub". It then became a legal
cemetery which the Grange Friends later acquired. No grave has ever
been marked there. (At first Friends didn't use stones anyway.) The
last burial there was in 1945.

Ross and Robina took us there. We couldn't possibly have found it on
our own, even though it's marked on our Ordnance Survey map. It is
about an acre of fenced-in land at a low corner of a pasture. It isn't
visible from the road, and it isn't marked in any way. It is completely
overgrown with thick woods. With what was left of Sunday the Chapmans
took us to their cottage in the Mourne Mountains. This area is granite
and unsuitable for crops; the only agriculture is sheep-farming. Near
their cottage is the Mourne Wall. Built between 1904 and 1922, it is a
dry stone wall made by hand with the local granite. It is about six
feet high, 8 inches wide, and 22 miles long. Its purpose was to define
the catchment area for the public water supply for Belfast. Ross is
72-years-old, and yet he (and his little dog) led us in walking along
the top of that wall. It required some agility.

We saw a dam, a reservoir, and a natural area in the Silent Valley.
It's called that because there are few animals and birds there, since
the ground is granite. However, the hills are covered with heather.
It was silent, mystical, and incredibly beautiful.

8. Invitation to Walter Winks Conference
--------------------------

10. Monthly Meeting for Business July 13, 2003
--------------------------
Yellow Springs Friends met for business at the meetinghouse July 13,
2003. Present were Carl Hyde, Lorena Hyde, Barry Hollister, Paul
Wagner,Ken Champney, Dick Eastman, Hazel Tulecke, Bruce Heckman, Kay
Hollister, Lou Ann Ebert, Jean Putnam, Irwin Abrams, Billie Eastman,
Joan Brucker, Jane Morgan, Heidi Eastman and Carol Simmons.

The meeting opened in silent worship, which included prayerful
consideration of the seventh query on the responsibilities of membership
in the meeting and the eighth query on education.

1. Minutes.

The recording clerk read the minutes from the June 1, 2003 Meeting for
Business. The minutes were approved with appreciation for the clarity
contained in them, as several minutes were left to be completed after
meeting for business.

NOTE: AFTER THE RISE OF THE JULY 13, 2003 MEETING FOR BUSINESS, IT WAS
DISCOVERED THAT THE TEXT OF THE MINUTE ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE CONTAINED IN
THE JUNE, 2003 MINUTES WAS NOT ACCURATE.

THE TEXT SHOULD READ: "YELLOW SPRINGS FRIENDS MEETING WILL CONSIDER
TAKING UNDER ITS CARE MARRIAGES OF COUPLES, WHETHER HOMOSEXUAL OR
HETEROSEXUAL, WHO WISH TO MAKE A LIFELONG, MONOGAMOUS COMMITMENT TO EACH
OTHER, WHERE ONE OF THE COUPLE IS A MEMBER OF THE MEETING."

2. Consideration of OVYM Queries.

Friends will consider issues related to the seventh query during reports
from Membership and Pastoral Care and Ministry and Advancement committee
reports at this business meeting. Friends will consider issues related
to the eighth query during a report on Friends Music Camp at this
business meeting.

3. Yellow Springs Friends Delegate to the 2003 Ohio Valley Yearly
Meeting Sessions.

Deb Kociszewski has been appointed as Yellow Springs Friends Meeting
representative to OVYM for the sessions to be held July 30 through
August 2, 2003.

4. Edward Hyde Membership.

Friends approved membership of Edward Hyde in the Yellow Springs Friends
Meeting.

5. Membership and Pastoral Care.

Jane Morgan reported that Dick Eastman, Paul Wagner, Denise Runyon and
Jane Brown met with Clyde Replogle to discuss matters regarding
spiritual development and recommend his membership in the Yellow Springs
Friends Meeting. Final approval of Clyde's membership will be
considered at the September, 2003 Meeting for Business.

6. Peace and Social Concerns.

Billie Eastman reported that the committee feels a strong sense of
concern regarding the Peace Testimony and a corporate statement of
support for those who work for peace. Billie distributed a revised
minute to address this concern. Friends are requested to draft a minute
that would travel with Friends who work for peace and express our
corporate support. Peace and Social Concerns will discuss he proposed
minute for further clarity and publication in the Quaker Shaker.

7. Ministry and Advancement. Bruce Heckman reported that:

Dale Hayes and Tom Applegate of the OVYM Advancement and Nurture
Committee will visit Yellow Springs on July 20, 2003. During a brown
bag session, they would like to discuss the OVYM connection with
Wilmington Yearly Meeting, and any concerns that Yellow Springs Friends
might want to send to OVYM.

State of Society Report. The called meeting for business considered,
revised and approved the State of Society Report. The report has been
sent to OVYM.

Friends are asked to consider their wish to serve on a planning
committee for such a retreat. [Ed. Note: Yellow Springs Friends
Retreat, October 31st-Nov 2nd 2003].

The clerk has requested that Ministry and Advancement provide quotes to
the Yellow Springs News for its monthly display ad highlighting our
meeting. Friends approved.

8. Newsletter Committee.

Irwin reported that the Quaker Shaker will be published and edited
according to the schedule published in the July, 2003 Quaker Shaker.

9. Memorial Committee.

In the past year, the committee has provided services and planned
memorial meetings for Enid Keen and Lila Templin. A memorial meeting for
Phil Ruopp will be held in mid September at the Glen Helen building.
Further details will be available as the time draws nearer.

10. William Preis Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust.

Ken Champney reported that we will refer to the trust as the Willian and
Barbara Preis Trust.
$100,000 has been placed in the trust to be invested. Paul and Betty
Wagner will receive $5000 per year from the proceeds and/or principal of
the trust as long as they live. Jim Miller of Barlett and Company in
Cincinnati will administer the investment per the preference of Bill
Preis. Ken   Champney will serve as Trustee pending future change.
Money manager's fees and expenses will also affect the balance of the
fund.

11. Friends Music Camp.
Ken Champney reported that Olney Friends School may not be available to
host Friends Music Camp after 2004. A permanent site may need to be
found. Friends noted the importance of conveying to OVYM the magnitude
of the responsibility for the care of Friends Music Camp, and that
principal management succession should be planned within 5 years (2008).
The Friends Music Camp Board is working with these concerns.

12. Quarterly Meeting Representatives. Friends discussed the
importance of appointed representatives to Miami Quarterly Meeting, and
that we all need to be open to serving as representatives.

The next meeting for business will be held on September 7, 2003 at 12:45
PM.

The meeting closed in silent worship.

Deb Kociszewski
