QUAKERSHAKER,
October, 2003 Newsletter of the Yellow Springs Friends Meeting
"When the son of man comes ... all ... will be gathered before him, and
he will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates his
sheep from his goats, ... the sheep at his right hand and the goats at
his left. Then he will say to those at his right, " ... when I was
hungry you gave me food, when I was thirsty you gave me something to
drink, when I was a stranger you invited me to your homes, when I was
naked you gave me clothes, when I was sick you looked after me, when I
was in prison you carne to see me." Then the upright will answer, " ...
When did we see you hungry and give you food, or thirsty and give you
something to drink? When did we see you a stranger, and invite you home,
or without clothing, and supply you with it? When did we see you sick or
in prison and go to see you?" He will answer, "I tell you, insofar as
you did it for one of these people who are humblest and lowest, you did
it to me." -- Matthew 25: 31 - 40

******
from Kris Webb (about clothing collection for Native Americans): Many
Friends (and others) have contributed to the clothing collection that
the Peace Committee has supported. I think folks might enjoy seeing
where the
clothing is going. Although the warehouse pictures and clothing
collection (on internet site, below) may look ample, winter is a
desperate time for those on the Rosebud Reservation (home of Wounded
Knee) and I'm sure any additional items (clean or new blankets, gloves,
coats, socks etc.) would be really appreciated. They can be left on
Hazel's front porch, 903 Xenia Ave. Some Friends might be interested in
seeing the internet site of the Native American Heritage Association
(NAHA): www.naha-inc.org

10. Anti-war marine in military prison
******
Stephen Funk is an antiwar marine who was charged with desertion because
he refused to report for duty when his unit was sent to Iraq. As he had
previously applied for CO status, a military jury found him not guilty
of desertion, but guilty of Unauthorized Absence; this is a partial
victory, as the sentence for desertion is more severe. Funk was
sentenced to six months in military prison at Camp Lejeune, NC, a bad
conduct discharge, a reduction of rank and forfeiture of two-thirds pay.
Based on past experience of conscientious objectors who served time
there, prisoners undergo discipline that mirrors the training of boot
camp with the intent of forcing compliance with prison rules. During the
1991 Gulf War, Conscientious Objectors were subject to numerous
instances of harassment during a week-long "indoctrination" in which
marines were hazed and forced to participate in war training chants such
as 'Blood Makes the Grass Grow, Marines make the Blood Flow." Funk is
not only a CO and war resister. He's also openly gay. His attorney fears
he will be at serious risk behind bars at Camp Lejeune. The way such
at-risk inmates make it through is relatively straightforward: lots of
mail and visitors, to shine light on his circumstances, and let the
Marine jailers know people are watching. Camp LeJeune is just 2 hours
from Quaker House in Fayetteville, NC. The staff there plan to visit
him, and they also ask us to send him letters encouraging him, asking
how he is and how he's being treated, etc. Mail solidarity means a lot
to folks in jail for their beliefs.
His address is: Stephen Funk Building 1041 PSC 20140 Camp Lejeune, NC

11. Monthly Meeting for Business September 7, 2003
******
Yellow Springs Friends met for business at the meetinghouse September 7,
2003. Present were Carl Hyde, Dick Eastman, Bruce Heckman, Jane Morgan,
Betty Wagner, Peg Champney, Ken Champney, Fran Goodman, Susan Hyde, Jean
Putnam, Paul Wagner, Hazel Tulecke, Dale Blanchard, Cindy Butler-Jones,
LuAnne Ebert, Deb Kociszewski
The meeting opened in silent worship, which included prayerful
consideration of the ninth query on meeting for worship.
1. Minutes.
The recording clerk read the minutes from the July 2003 Meeting for
Business. Minute number 7 will be corrected on the copy submitted to
Archive. The third point will now read "The committee proposed a meeting
retreat to be held mid-Fall 2003. Friends are asked to consider their
wish to serve on a planning committee for such a retreat."
2. Friends Music Camp.
Peg Champney reported that Olney Friends School has agreed to work more
closely with Friends Music Camp during the summer camp. Olney Friends
School looks forward to the collaboration as a means to promote
enrollment at the school. The Friends Music Camp Alumni Association is
working toward this goal as well.
3. Membership of Clyde Replogle.
Friends approved the membership to Clyde Replogle in the Yellow Springs
Friends Meeting.
4. Havurah Torah.
Paul Wagner read a letter from Randi Rothman of the Yellow Springs
Havurah. The Havurah has requested that a Torah be housed at Rockford
Chapel, and has met with Paul Wagner and Don Hollister regarding
arrangements for the housing of the Torah. Friends expressed concern for
disaster liability for this document. Paul Wagner will follow up with
Antioch University on this matter. Friends approved the housing of the
Torah at Rockford and request that the clerk convey our joy at working
with Havurah. Friends agreed to invite members of Havurah to a brown bag
lunch Sunday, September 21 to share the importance of the Torah. [Note
from QS editor: That date was not convenient for Havurah members, so
meeting was later changed to Nov. 16 -- see p. 3)
5. Rockford Scheduling.
Paul Wagner shared concern about the scheduling of Rockford. Paul will
schedule a meeting with Antioch University officials to propose that
Yellow Springs Friends handle all scheduling at Rockford, that new locks
and keys be made, and that Antioch security be instructed notto admit
people to Rockford without authorization. Paul also proposed a fee of $1
per person to groups using Rockford to offset maintenance. Friends
approved Paul's offer to work with Antioch officials, and hold off on a
decision about the matter of the user fee.
6. OVYM Rep Report.
Deb Kociszewski resented a summary report of OVYM 2003 sessions. The
complete report will be published in the November 2003 Quaker Shaker.
Friends accepted the report with thanks.
7. Miami Quarterly Meeting. Susan Hyde reported that Miami Quarterly
Meeting will be held October 19, 2003 at Waynesville, and will feature
Tom Hamm, Michael Birkel, and Milton Cook. Saturday, October 18 will
feature a host of activities related to the Ohio and Waynesville
bicentennial celebrations. Friends are encouraged to attend.
8. FWCC. FWCC Midwest Regional Gathering will be held September 20 in
Waynesville. Friends are encouraged to attend.
9. Proposed Budget.
Ken Champney reported for the Finance Committee. He presented the
proposed budget for the 10 / 1 / 03 to 9 / 30 / 04 and Finance Committee
recommendations for the coming year. Expenses for the next year are
anticipated to increase, particularly in the area of facilities
maintenance. Friends approved an increase of $ 750 for Ministry and
Advancement toward the meeting retreat. Friends approved the additional
funds requested for Musa Hamideh's tuition to Olney Friends School.
Finance Committee has recommended discontinuing the contribution to
Gdimo School in Kenya pending resolution of difficulties in
communication with the school. Friends approved the proposed budget.
Final approval is scheduled for the October 2003 meeting for business.
10. Ministry and Advancement. Bruce Heckman reported that Ministry and
Advancement will take care of planning the meeting retreat to be held
Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, 2003 at the Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center. The
committee has identified a need for someone to oversee food, as well as
someone to oversee the Teen program.
Friends are encouraged to consider serving as Yellow Springs Friends
representative to Miami Quarterly Meeting on October 10, 2003 in
Waynesville, Ohio.
The next meeting for business will be held on October 5, 2003 at 12:45
PM.
The meeting closed in silent worship.
