7. A Note to the Meeting:
************
Dear Friends, Thanks for sending The Quakershaker. Reading through it
over time shows us how important the slow, deliberative process is. All
too many groups which endow one authority figure move too quickly and
too often not in the group’s best interest. Jane and I have become
regular visitors at the Chester Hill Meeting (1840), Ohio Yearly
Meeting, and continue as members of the Episcopal Church here, but our
social action (“works”) concern too often gets lost in the church
structure. Bruce taught last winter in Argentina as a Rotary
International Ambassador. (His 6th teaching there.) Regards to our
friends in the meeting. Bruce and Jane Ergood, of Athens, Ohio.

One thing I understand now is that one’s intellect alone won’t pull
one through, and that the greatest service it can perform is to open a
window for that thing we call the divine spirit. If one trusts to it
alone, it’s like trusting to an artificial system of ventilation—correct
in theory, but musty in practice. How I wish it were as easy to throw
everything open to the spirit of God as it is to fresh air. —Hilda
Clark, 1908

8. Books and Chocolate—Jane Morgan
************
I have a few copies of books leftover from the Children’s Fair. The
book is The House Above the Trees, by Ethel Cook Eliot, author of The
Wind Boy. It is a 140-page, illustrated fantasy about an 8-year-old
girl, Hepatica, who is seeking, amongst other things, her mother. The
soft-cover of this edition sells for $12, half of which the publisher
donates to the children’s fair. Let me know (767-1461) if you would like
a copy.
Also, if anyone would like some dark chocolate pecan bark, such as I
brought one Sunday after Meeting recently, le me know as I have some to
spare.

Quakers came to Ohio beginning in the late 1700s and the early 1800s.
The first Quaker to arrive in Ohio was George Harlan in 1795. By 1800,
approximately eight hundred Quaker families called Ohio home. Learn more

10. Sunday Evening Spiritual Nurture Group—Kathy Angell
************
A new Spiritual Nurture Group will be starting in January. This group
grew out of a desire to discern and follow the leadings of the Spirit,
deepen spiritual connection among those who attend, and further deepen
spiritual connection in meeting for worship.
The focus will be experiential (not “heady” or political). The aim will
be to connect with Spirit and/or share related experiences,
difficulties, questions, etc., which we encounter during daily life. We
will rely significantly, although not exclusively, on worship-sharing
(with queries). We may also use spiritual exercises or other modes as
led by Spirit.
The group will meet once or twice a month on Sunday evenings. We will
start off meeting at Rockford Chapel, but may move to Friends' homes if
way opens and the homes are accessible to all members of the group.
The first two meetings will be open to all those interested and able to
attend on those nights. However, soon thereafter, the group will
likely become open only to those who are interested and can make an
ongoing commitment. The purpose of closing the group is not to be
exclusive, but to foster a situation in which spiritual development can
build from one meeting to the next. Those interested should be sure to
come to one of the first two meetings in January.
The first three Spiritual Nurture Group meeting dates are:
Sunday Jan. 9, 7-9 p.m., Rockford Chapel, open to all interested in
trying it out
Sunday Jan. 30, 7-9 p.m., Rockford Chapel, open to all interested in
trying it out
Sunday Feb. 13, 7-9 p.m., TBA
This is as much Light as I have right now. I trust more will come to the
group as we meet together. If you have any questions, please feel free
to call Kathy Angell, at 767-9019.

Quaker Jargon Buster!
http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/pdaniels/qjargon.html
Some sample entries:
* Christocentric - A Quaker whose inspiration is essentially Christian
and who holds that the Religious Society of Friends is essentially a
Christian denomination.
* Universalist - A Quaker who believes that there is a universal truth
that may be found in all faiths.
* Popcorn ministry - There are days when everybody seems to have
something to say at meeting for worship. There is little or no silence.
People keep bursting into ministry like a pan full of popcorn on the
stove.
And (found elsewhere) the definition of Inward Light: the direct,
unmediated experience of the Divine. Also known as the Seed, the Guide,
the Christ Within, and that of God in every person.
************
General Business Procedure: The Society of Friends believes that right
and satisfactory decision is dependent upon full mutual understanding
and agreement. Therefore it transacts its business by united decision
under Divine Guidance, rather than by divisive majority vote, striving
to reach its conclusions in a spirit of reasonableness and forbearance.
—from The Ohio Valley Yearly Meeting Book of Discipline

First Query: Silent Worship & Ministry
Do you attend meetings for worship in a spirit of willing service and of
prayerful desire to make them profitable to each individual and to the
assembled group? Are you prepared for worship expecting that your
worship will be a source of strength and guidance? Are you careful not
to disturb the spirit of the meeting by late arrival? Do you practice a
waiting spiritual worship and a free and open ministry under Divine
guidance?
