RE: grounding SHW collectors?

In the manual for the AET differential controller (Eagle-1) I see this
nugget:
COLLECTOR GROUNDING- The Solar collector panel array “must be GROUNDED’
directly to an earth ground line . This is necessary
to prevent damage from nearby lightening strikes which induce very
“DAMAGING” high voltages in all nearby ungrounded metallic surfaces.

Local inspector is wondering whether my flat plate collectors should
be grounded. This installation happens to be on a metal roof. Anybody
else come across this yet and how did it pan out?
