Unclaimed Rhod. General Service Medals  Alastair Honeybun
 Jan 28, 2002 21:38 PST
Circulated on behalf of the Flame Lily Foundation.

The Zimbabwe National Army advertised in the Sunday Mail of 20 January
that they have over 9000 RGSM's unclaimed, which they state are mainly
named to whites who have left the country. They have given people three
months to claim from 20/1/2002 - otherwise they plan to dispose of them.
(Army HQ address is: Private Bag 7720, Causeway, Zimbabwe.) The
Zimbabwe Medal Society Secretary - Ian Barham - made an appointment with
a Colonel, whom he said was very amicable and very co-operative. The
Colonel is very grateful for any help they receive on getting these
medals to the recipients. He says he'll give Ian a copy of the FULL
Roll of unclaimed Medals.

Ian asked about criteria for claiming, and he was told all they need is
No, Rank and Name. Ian also asked if there was any possibility of
putting the Medals in the Zimbabwe Medal Society's custody for
distribution, to which the Colonel replied that Ian must put the request
in writing, and he would take it to 'higher authority' for approval.

Anne also wrote: "You might like to add that I hold 77 Air Force RGSM's,
which can also be claimed with proof of service, or suitable
identification. These were handed over to Peter (Wing Commander P.W.
Cooke) many years ago for safe keeping, and distribution, which we
advertised without any luck. I am loath to just hand them back to find
their way into some corrupt deal, or for them to be destroyed."
