Alan Harris Writes:-

The Marandellas war memorial project is ongoing - have managed to
collect photographs of two of the chaps this year making for a total
of thirteen out of the twenty WW2 commemorated servicemen.

If at all possible I would be most grateful for your help in locating
relatives or photographs of the following who are also named on the
memorial:

Baker, Richard Henry - Pilot Officer 237 (Rhodesia) Sqdn - died of
injuries 23rd June 1941 and buried Ramleh, Israel. He was OC
Communications Squadron at Lydda at time of his death. Interestingly
he was educated at Selborne College here in East London. The College
has a very impressive annual cadet/remembrance service which I always
attend.

Edwards, Gordon Charles - Flt/Sgt. He was a radio operator/observer on
a night bomber Beaufighter (X7573) that was detailed for a training
exercise on 26th May, 1942. The aircraft flew into high ground in
cloud and crashed at Moneyneagh, County Antrim with the loss of all on
board.

Henderson, Alister Hugh Seton - Sgt. Was pilot of an Oxford (AT603)
that was detailed for dual instruction training exercise on 21st July
1942. The aircraft failed to climb after take off and crashed into
trees and farm buildings at Homeleigh Farm near Southrop in
Gloucester.

and some Army chaps:

Simpson, Paul Zephanian Tasker - Lance Bombardier Royal Horse
Artillery - killed 27th May 1942 and commemorated on the Alamein
Memorial. A former Ruzawi School scholar; he was the son of the
Marandellas Parish Priest.

Watkin, Hugh Geoffrey - Lieut - East African Intelligence Corps. DOAS
16th January 1943 and buried Mombasa. He also served WW1 as a Captain
in the 3rd Bn Cheshire Regiment. His son, John Hugh Watkin MC, killed
at Dunkirk.

Wright, Archibald Edward - Lance Bombardier Southern Rhodesia
Artillery - accidently drowned 16th January 1941 and buried Nairobi.

If you can help then please mail Alan direct on alanan-@telkomsa.net
