Hey there!!
I write to you from the amazingly beautiful and sun-drenched island of
Mykonos, part of the Agean islands in Greece. It's really quite amazing
here! The water is crystal clear, the sand bleach white, and everyone
friendly and fun. I must admit, this part of my trip is a bit
over-the-top in terms of luxury, since my mom and I are travelling
together via giant sailboat from Athens to Mykonos (and then Santorini,
Rhodes in the Greek islands, and later on the Turkish coast!)--it's her
graduation present to me, and it really couldn't be better. But by
luxurious means or no, the Greek island are so beautiful. The light
especially is like nothing I've ever seen (so intense at midday and yet
so soft in the late afternoons and early mornings), and I think my
photos have tried to take advantage of that!
Before sailing we explored Athens and the Acropolis, which was really a
treat. I can't quite describe the feeling of standing atop the
Acropolis and staring awestruck at what remains of the Parthenon. It
just blew me away. From the Acropolis (the highest of Athens' seven
hills), you can see the entire city of Athens, which I didn't realize is
really quite huge and sprawling. And contrary to what many have
descried as the unfortunate modernization of Athens, I still found the
rest of the city really interesting, authentic, and culturally unique.
The boat we're sailing on is REALLY cool, since it's a 200-foot yacht
called the WindSpirit (part of the WindStar line). Most of the people
on it are a wee bit older (though there are some younger ones as well),
and so I usually find myself amongst very few people on the decks, as
most people are hunkered down in their cabins or living it up in the
dining room. So it really feels like I have this HUGE boat to myself!
Last night I went out onto one of the top decks and watched the stars
for about half an hour or so. It was an immense sky that could really
only compare to those I've seen while backpacking--really fantastic. It
was made especially cool since I realized at one point we were sailing
on the Mediterranean, with the rolling Greek hills to either side and a
massive sky (milky way and all) above. Just too much!
I better jet soon since I want to take care of my digital photos for all
of you and still enjoy the afternoon, but be sure to check out the link
I'll send along on my next note (to a part of photopoint.com), since it
has some pretty cool shots of both Athens, Mykonos, and the sea in
between. I hope you're all well and I'll be sure to write from either
Turkey or Paris!
take care,
Seth
