I'm on the road again...and in Peru! Woo hoo!

hey there!
Well, after figuring out loads of logistics and enduring some planned
(and unexpected) delays, I'm on the road once again! This time I'm
spending about three months in South America: first Peru, then Bolivia,
Chile, and a wee bit of Brazil and Argentina at the tail end. It's
indeed a lot to pack into three months, but nothing's really set in
stone (since if it were, my pack would be waaaay heavier! :)
So far, things have been going pretty well. The 9 hour trip from LA to
Lima wasn't so bad (though it did have its moments--more on that later),
but my plan to high-tail it out of sprawling, congested, LAesque Lima
and head for the hills (Cusco, that is) did mean that I had two
consecutive days of getting up at some ungodly hour and being at the
airport by 4:30am--which can be pretty exhausting. So when I finally
made it to Cusco today, I spent most of the morning and afternoon
catching up on much-needed sleep!
In the little time I have had to see the city so far, I must say it's a
pretty remarkable place. There's something about the air here (maybe
it's the thinness--Cusco is at about 10,000 feet) that makes colors more
vibrant and the sky simply dazzling at any time in the day. The
luscious light of this mountain city is certainly something I hope to
make a part of my photos, and I'll be sure to give you the heads-up when
I post the first batch (this trip is totally digital, so you'll miss out
on nothing!)
Well, I better run since I made a big whopping promise to keep the
e-mails short this time around (both for your benefit as well as so I'm
not stuck in internet cafes hours at a time), but I'll be sure to drop
you all a line once I've spent some more time here, as well as in Macchu
Pichu (I think I'm going to do the 4-day hike to the sacred inca city in
a few days, once I acclimatize). So take care, and feel free to drop me
a line!
hasta,
Seth
p.s. If any of you are either planning on being in South America when I
am or know of people who are, please let me know!
p.p.s. Oh yeah, about the airport: I really just don't think travel
will be the same post 9/11. Between the INTENSE security at LAX (no
private vehicles are allowed near the terminal and m-16 armed security
stand by the x-ray machines) and the 1-on-1 Customs agent questioning
each passenger boarding the plane to Lima had to deal with, it's just a
different world. But don't get me wrong--it's still a beautiful world
to travel in! :)
