Hello Again!
Well, it's been a long, long while since I last wrote, but I thought I'd
catch you all up on what I've been up to these past few months, and what I'm
onto next. (Not to worry: this note will be short, sweet, and to the point,
unlike those other rambling tomes I usually write!)
I can't quite believe it but a little more than a 14 months ago I started
this list and my year of travels. It was quite a year, to say the least,
and I never could have imagined the adventures, insights, mishaps and
discoveries it would bring. Nor could I possibly predict how it would end
(a la a lovely spider bite) or what on earth would come next. Indeed, even
when I returned home to Los Angeles from Hong Kong, I still was quite
clueless as to where to go and what to do.
The two or so months that followed were odd and even overwhelming, as I
helped my sister prepare for her wedding, started working part time for a
friend at a gallery in Los Angeles, and juggled countless questions about my
"career" and "job path" in that wonderful (or wonderfully daunting?) place
we all know as the "real world." The traveling had officially ended, but a
new sort of journey began, one in which I struggled to figure out that all
too important question that looms large over the head of a young
twentysomething fresh out of college: WHAT NEXT?!?!
And by an odd, seemingly impossible twist of fate and series of events, I
found it--or perhaps it found me. An old college roommate of my sister's
who is currently working as a senior advisor to the Fire Commissioner to the
New York City Fire Department found out that I was in the market for a job
and called me, wondering if I'd be interested in pursuing a speechwriting
position that was going to open up at the commissioner's office. Eyes wide
with disbelief and jaw almost bruised from crashing onto the desk where I
sat, I struggled to compose myself and then managed to reply with a casual
"sure, that'd be interesting." It was the single greatest understatement of
my life.
Within a few weeks I had pulled together and sent off a writing sample,
flown to New York, had an interview, and received an offer for the job.
Now, merely a week and a half after the official offer, I'm off to New York
city, where I plan to work as the Fire Commissioner's speechwriter for at
least a year. I'll be living in Borham Hill, Brooklyn, and working at the
nearby MetroTech center. My new address and phone number are as follows:
Seth Familian
119 Bergen St., Garden Apartment
Brooklyn, NY 11201
mobile: 646.220.0114
home: 718.522.5005 (tentative number--it needs to be reconfirmed by the
phone company, so try me on my mobile first)
There's always an extra place to stay in my apartment, so if you're ever in
New York and need a place to crash, don't hesitate to get in touch!
Thanks again for being a part of my travels this past year. Your
encouragement and at times even criticism of my e-mails
kept me going and kept me on my toes. Your willingness to read and respond
made me confident that wherever I was and however isolated I might have
been, I was never alone. So for all that and so much more, thank you.
In other news, sethontheroad.com is virtually complete, and I'm waiting to
post the final changes and additions (including a purchasing engine that I
designed this summer) until I'm settled in New York. That way if anyone
does decided they'd like to purchase a print, I can deliver it to them
without delay! I'm also currently working on a hand-bound book of
photographs and writings from my travels, which I hope to have complete
within the next month or two. The book is an incredibly exciting project,
as it's very large format (13"x14") and in my opinion does far better
justice to my photos than is possible on the web. Though producing the book
by hand is quite (almost prohibitively) expensive and I'm only planning on
creating about three copies, do let me know if you'd like a copy (I'll post
a sample online) and I can make one for you at cost.
Once again, thanks so much for hearing me out and indulging me in my own odd
form of digital banter (or babble?), and do keep in touch and let me know if
you're ever in NYC!
tons of love and all the best,
Seth
