SUMO ###87 1st August 2004. The none-too-stinky "Slinky Trail".
From / To: Kita-Hachioji
Hare: STIMULATE-HER Pack: a dozen hounds, one virgin, a couple of
zombies, and two junior-hashers.
Driver/BeerMeister: PRINCESS-BUBBLES, Shotgun/Navigator: SAITAMA-MAMA.
An old favorite haunt of HAZUKASHII, the start was in our usual park
near the station so that we were largely undisturbed (there are few
trains on the Hachiko-sen), except for the excitable cicadas, which
KHUMING-ROUGE can give such a good impersonation (imcicadation?) of. We
delayed the start for stragglers having quit trying to give Amanda-san a
wake up call (although she did join us for the on-after party which she
called "breakfast"). When the hare took off heading towards the hills
we waited the prescribed 12 minutes to give him a head start. The trail
led down to the river and there were copious checks and CBs that kept us
on our toes. Surprisingly we didn't enter the woods and stuck to the
valley with a tricky inside loop or two. Although RAPUNZEL was trail
blazing much of the way, there were enough switch backs that, like a
Slinky-Spring going down steps, the front would sometimes be last, and
the back, first. It was another hot day and the trail was quite short
to bring most of us on-home to the cool beverages and munchy snacks in
about an hour.
We welcomed the first-timer virgin (to Sumo, she also runs other Tokyo
hashes) Just-Hiromi a simultaneous translator from Shinagawa who is a
HUGE fan of Hall & Oates (the 80s singers). I mention this as fuel for
her future naming and I mention naming because we had two 6 timers who
were offered the option to keep their current hash-names, or to be
adopted into the Sumo kennel. Well KICK-MY-BALLS, who was actually an 8
timer when his Sumo overnigher credits were added on, and NARITA-CHEETA
both chose, like Neo in 'The Matrix', to take the red pill and see the
truth for themselves. I can't go into details of the machinations
whereby their names are derived but the mysteries of the sacred process
led us to rename them "8-MY-BALLS" and "P.U.D." which stands for
"PICKS-UP-DRUNKS", but no she complained, drunks always try to pick her
up. Anyway, congratulations guys.
10-Xers: The fish family KO-FUGU, PUFFER, UP-DA-LADDER and the only
slightly fishy RAPUNZEL. Double digits: HULA-GIRL looking cool in a
summer frock (11) and LAID-IN-JAPAN a.k.a. FUGU (33). Welcome back:
KHUMING-ROUGE fresh from Cardiff where the sheep are delicious and he
enjoyed the 22Km ball-breaker with HAZUKASHII (who we toasted).
Nominations: CHUCKY being a zombie (hungover) and SHRUB for having
movie-star sunglasses. AWOL: ICE-D and CAMEL-TOE.
Announcements:
Next week 8th August start from Nishi-Hachioji on the Chuo-sen @ 2 PM.
The mystery hare is someone whose name begins with "STIMUL" and ends
with "ATEHER" and we hope to join the Hachioji city festival later that
evening so wear yukatta.
Next next week: 15th August from Hashimoto on the Yokohama-sen. This is
the mystery hare's (see above) final farewell sayonara bash which we
will celebrate with a Magnificent Barbecue hosted by Sumo. Please try
to make it to this one.
Next next next week: AOOOGA, AOOOGA! ****HASH ALERT****
We plan a Sumo overnighter at beautiful O-shima (island south of Tokyo).
