Fwd: change the world-Post and Boast  Molly Brewton
 Oct 05, 2005 10:36 PDT
Dear Folks,

A colleague at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, where I work, has come up
with a very good plan. See below. If you decide to take up the challenge,
you can mail me your statistics and I will boast for you. Feel free to
forward this on to any others you think might want to join in.

Best,
Molly

Okay all you nature-lovers, environmental idealists, do-gooders, etc.,
here's a chance to put your efforts where your announcements are (like
"money where your mouth is"). The EPA is leading the following campaign:

Change a Light, Change the World Campaign:
October 1 - November 30, 2005

The ENERGY STAR Change a Light, Change the World Campaign is a national
challenge to encourage every American to help change the world, one
light-one step-at a time. The campaign culminates in the fall around
ENERGY STAR Change a Light Day (the 1st Wednesday in October) with
promotions running locally and nationally from October 1 - November 30.
EPA and DOE, along with partners around the country, are encouraging
Americans to take the ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge. If every U.S.
household changed just one light to an ENERGY STAR qualified one, we'd
collectively save more than 35 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.
That's the environmental equivalent of taking one million cars off the road.

Unfortunately, we do not have time to organize a big local campaign, nor
do I know of one (maybe some of you do), but I thought this was such a
good idea I would just try a simple challenge and see how it works.

I invite you, friends and colleagues, to participate in my Post and Boast
Challenge.

I challenge everyone on these two list-serves to change a bulb (or two or
10). Replace an incandescent lightbulb with some of those fluorsecent
bulbs; or at least purchase one or two to replace the next incandescent
bulb that burns out. Challenge others (family and friends) as well. When
you do, email me (off list) your name, how many bulbs you changed, or got
others to change (or email me if you already have a household full of
these bulbs, and you will get special honors). I will compile a list and
post how many bulbs we as a community changed, and how much energy that
will save.

Tonight I am going to stop at Home Depot on the way home and buy some of
these bulbs myself. I already have two in place that have been trying
recently, and I have been really happy with them. They cost more, but
last much much longer (like 10 times longer or something), and use a
fraction as much energy for the same light quality (66% energy saved). So
tonight I am going to change my bulbs, and tomorrow I am going to Post and
Boast how many I did.

Who knows, if enough of us join together and do this, we might save enough
energy to make up for the wind-mills that didn't get erected?

No POSTING OR BOASTING until you actually have purchased the bulbs. On the
honor system. So we will have a slow start.

Who's gonna join?

Kim
