"It takes a whole village to raise a child."
— Ashanti proverb
"If we are to reach real peace in this world . . . we shall have to
begin with the children."
— Mohandas Gandhi, Indian nonviolent civil rights leader (1869-1948)
“A hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove
or how large my bank account was. But the world may be a better place
because I was important in the life of a child.”

INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S DAY
As a teacher always on the lookout for an opportunity to create a
connection between what we do within the four walls of our classroom and
the outside world, I keep a running list of days and dates that are
recognized as significant. Some are expected and well known, others
are obscure. National Clean Out Your Closet Day is a funny one that we
enjoy, and then there are significant historical recognitions such as
Flag Day, Veteran’s Day, and Memorial Day.
When I came across the fact that June 1st is International Children’s
Day, I began to think of ways to recognize the significance of that
designation. I started thinking of children the world over and how very
different their lives often are from the lives of children that I spend
my days with, both at home and at school. I began thinking of the
children of Sudan’s Dufar region who have fled their homes and hope only
for clean drinking water so that they might live another day. I think
of children in Iraq who, for nearly twenty years, have been caught in
the crossfire of war. And then I think...but what can I do?
If you also struggle with wondering how you can help make a difference,
I’m happy to share an important website with you,
http://www.unicef.org/gmfc/ where you can learn about The Global
Movement for children and become a part of this landmark movement
yourself. From the movement:
“Our determination is rooted in the knowledge that in furthering the
best interests of children, the most effective actions must come from
within the context of our own lives and hearts, and from listening to
children and young people themselves. As members of the human family,
each of us is responsible. All of us are accountable.”
As you go about your busy day, take a moment to reflect on the lives of
children all over the world...and how you can be a part of the hope of
tomorrow by enriching the life of a child today.

A SPECIAL OFFER FOR HOMESCHOOLING FAMILIES
Most families who have made the decision to homeschool are, by their
very nature, adventurous educators who are always looking to enhance the
lifetime learning of their children by trying new teaching methods and
materials.
Earlier in 2004, we respectfully solicited input from experienced
homeschooling parents in developing a curriculum which is customized to
meet the unique needs of homeschooling families. The response was
overwhelming! We're now proud to invite homeschooling families to be a
part of our product launch and PILOT these materials in their home at no
cost or obligation to purchase further materials. We simply ask that
you provide us with honest feedback that will help us continue to
improve this new curriculum for other families.
Your sample kit includes ten daily lessons which are presented in an
easy-to-implement format. The lessons are presented incrementally and
present the behaviors, skills, and values of polite behavior in a
building block fashion with parents and children moving through the
lessons at a pace determined by their own comfort level. Daily 'Table
Talk' reinforces the days' lesson at the family dinner table...the
original forum for learning about polite behavior.
Sample kits will ship on June 30, 2004 and we request responses to our
survey by August 1, 2004. If you are interested in learning more,
please contact us today! (This offer is limited to the first
twenty-five families who contact us, serious inquiries only, please).
