LOOKING AHEAD TO BACK-TO-SCHOOL
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a Momma and a
Schoolteacher. Not a day goes by that I’m not grateful that I’ve been
able to see both of these dreams come true. And about this time of
year, when those new school supplies start to hit the shelves, I can
hardly walk past the rows and rows of new glue sticks and unsharpened
pencils without quivering a little on the inside....ooh, it’s such an
exciting time!
There’s something about a new school year that is such a time of
renewal! And in my experience, even the most hardened veteran teacher
who may think they’ve seen and done it all just cannot help but approach
their incoming students with anticipation and a fresh sense of
possibility.
Of course, ‘Back-to-School’ isn’t necessarily limited to one season of
the year . In the south, where I grew up and where I used to teach,
many schools are changing the calendars in such a way that the school
year begins earlier and earlier. Here in Michigan, there’s legislation
in our state senate to ensure that school can NOT begin before Labor Day
each year. And for many homeschooling families, school is year-round or
often begins during the summer months.
Regardless of where your own family falls on the back-to-school
calendar, here are some helpful links that will surely enhance your
child’s learning experience, wherever and that may be!

NATIONAL KIDS DAY IS AUGUST 1ST
From the website www.kidsday.com:
“We all know the importance of physical activity for health and just
plain fun. There are many ways to engage in physical activity with your
kids, even for short periods of time. It is important to set realistic
expectations and not commit to more than you can successfully deliver.
The key is to make the time you spend participating in physical activity
with your children meaningful. Start out by finding things you can do
together two or three times a week for 15 or 20 minutes and build from
there.
Start our by finding things you can do together two or three times a
week for 15 or 20 minutes and build from there. Here are some ideas:
-Take a walk. Play follow-the-leader as you go. Walk backwards to add
a new dimension to your time together. Just be careful and watch where
you’re going! Hold hands while you walk. Ask questions. This is a
great time to reconnect with your child.
-Throw a ball. You can do this in the house, too–just use a NERF ball.
Wind up and let ‘er fly!
-Play foursquare.
-Go to the park and climb on the jungle gym together or play tag.
-Shoot hoops at the nearest basketball court.
-Let your child give you a swimming lesson.

The mission of The Tea Party Company is to Cultivate a Culture of
Courtesy. Our approach to this goal is three-fold. First, we will
facilitate social events including hosted tea parties, parent-and-child
dinner parties, and sponsorship of a nationwide tea society. Secondly,
we will provide direct instruction to children in the behaviors, skills,
and values of good manners. Finally, we will complement and complete
existing Character Education initiatives in schools by providing
educators with effective teaching tools for bringing manners into the
mainstream.
