REACTING TO THE NATION’S PAIN: The Network for Good
SEPTEMBER SAVINGS FOR SCHOOLS
===========================================
“Suffering and joy teach us, if we allow them, how to make the leap of
empathy, which transports us into the soul and heart of another person.
ln those transparent moments we know other people's joys and sorrows,
and we care about their concerns as if they were our own.” –Fritz
Williams
“One does not love a place the less for having suffered in it unless it
has all been suffering, nothing but suffering.” –Jane Austen

As I write this I have one eye in the same place that many of your eyes
have been during these past nearly eight days-–on the television news.
And it renders us awestruck at the suffering of others.
Naturally, we’re all in a mood for grieving and praying for the victims
and opening our hearts. And if history repeats itself, most of us will
also open our pocketbooks. But is it enough?
As the story unfolds, it is becoming more and more evident that the
grassroots actions are even more successful in many ways than our
federal resources...members of churches, civic groups, and other
volunteer organizations are being called upon and are coming through
with hot meals, warm beds, money, care packages, and many other
meaningful ways. And so we need to prepare for the likelihood that in
coming days or months, it will come time for us to step up as
individuals and make sacrifices and difficult choices so that we may
make an impact on the recovery.
It might also be suggested that in the meantime, as so many of us
continue our day-to-day lives, it seems the least we can do is work to
make our own little slice of the world a more pleasant place to be. I
remind myself as I remind all of you to focus on getting it RIGHT
(Respect, Integrity, Grace, Hospitality, and Tact) where we live, work,
and play.
Not only is now a good time to be especially kind to others, but to our
environment and our nation’s infrastructure as well. Switch off the
lights or turn down the air conditioning to conserve electricity. Stop
letting the water run while brushing your teeth. Ride your bike or walk
instead of driving when you can to save on gas. In any way, large or
small, Cultivate a Culture of Courtesy where you live, work, and play.
We shouldn’t have to wait until a neighbor loses their home to make a
friend of them!

A favorite September re-print:
A VICTORIAN CELEBRATION: MICHAELMAS
Now the Harvest is in,
Grain is in the bin,
Through hard work and God’s aid
The year’s rent has been paid.
With Pennies to spare
We’re off to the Michaelmas Fair!
-Mala Powers (as printed in the book ‘Mrs. Sharp’s Traditions’ by
Sarah Ban Breathnach)
The ancient celebration of Michaelmas is a perfect example of the
Victorians' pursuit of merriment. This ancient harvest festival held at
the end of September dates back to the sixth century and is still
celebrated today in the Celtic provinces of England and France.
As described in the book 'Mrs. Sharp's Traditions' by Sarah Ban
Breathnach, this festival celebrated the legend of England's patron
saint, Saint George who was the earthly representative of the Archangel
Michael. In heaven, Michael was the angel who threw Lucifer our for his
treachery, and on earth Saint George was famous for slaying dragons and
rescuing princesses. During the nineteenth century, English harvest or
Michaelmas Fairs offered Victorian families a well-deserved opportunity
to enjoy themselves after months of strenuous labor.
Enjoy an informal tea party with your own family...invite young
princesses to don simple paper crowns they create themselves, while
heroic young men play the role of Saint George, slaying yummy dragons
that you bake together from refrigerated cookie dough.
And don't forget the blackberry jam for your tea sandwiches--legend has
it that after the devil was thrown out of heaven he landed in the
blac-berry brambles. After Michaelmas, it is said that the blackberries
turn bad!
However you celebrate the changing of seasons, allow yourself the
invaluable gift of an afternoon of wonder and merriment with those you
love!
